Test pipe vs. Resonated Test pipe
#16
i run the ams resonated testpipe.
make awesome power for stock turbo on mustang dyno.
pop really loud once in a while, but never make a flame.
would say that there is no power loss at all since the resonator is on the outside of the pipe.
never had a problem with law enforcement yet, even when they stand in the middle of the road slowing down traffic to a crawl just to see your seatbelt ison

If your car shoot flames with a basic test pipe, it will do a same with a resonated one also, if doesnt then it will not do it with a straight pipe either, there is no difference there. As i said the basic difference is the a little less noise. That is all.
Only difference is the resonated pipe has an extra sound deathening layer inside:
so there for a little thicker then a simple test pipe which is basically nothing but a tube.
here is how basically the resonated test pipe looks like.
this is a classic test pipe for an Evo :
i hope this is clears it out for everyone.

I had a resonated test pipe then upgraded to a normal test pipe, and really, not too much difference. I was expecting a huge sound change as everyone always goes on about how they hate how loud their car is. As far as performance again nothing too noticeable but the popping and fire is more regular now.

grow some, just go with the test pipe. Ets works great and sounds good. Ive had mine for a while now. The car is loud, just deal with it. Who cares? It's supposed to be loud, it's part of the package if you don't like loud maybe this is not the car for you. Just embrace it. I feel like psychiatrist.

There are a few aftermarket exhausts that look near factory in appearance and still keep the sound level down and will help make the most out of the test pipe and tune though. Think of this scale of comfort:
Descending Loudest to quietest :
TP --------> Louder CBE
TP --------> Quieter CBE
ResonatedTP/HFC ------> Louder CBE
ResonatedTP/HFC -----> Quieter CBE
OE Cat -----------> OE CBE

Yes, and you can make decent gains in power, however, it's still recommended to get a tune as you'll throw a CEL.

Thanks man.

I wish it were that simple, but we know that it isn't. For example, you can run a 3" DP and test-pipe into a T1R 76S and it will be quieter than an OE DP and cat into a Agency Power Y-pipe exhaust.

I was being very generic about it. Ultimately the CBE portion can make huge changes to stuff. Best way to buy is to hear an Evo with a setup and decide you like it
I went with the GReddy Ti-C because I liked that it has a resonator and always sounded good in the dozens of videos I listened to off youtube.
I bought it, installed it and love how I can cruise at 75-80 and it doesn't drone, yet love the deep sound I get at lower speeds with heavy throttle.
EDIT:
Oh and I was super partial to single-exit

yeah i have a neighbor who's running a test pipe on his 240sx and i dont really like the sound when he drives by, he sounds like a big *** lawnmower. I'd imagine an evo would sound similar since it's also a 4banger.
I was thinking (hoping) the resonator would muffle some of that and leave the deep, bassy sound.

Here's an entire thread on "big *** lawnmowers".

thanks for clearing things up guys,
i think i've limited my options to 2 setups:
ETS v2 regular with resonated TP, or ETS vs quiet with a regular TP
anyone heard both? which do you think will be louder?
