Evo X - Considering

So I am looking at the new 2014 Evo X for my wife, I currently have a 2013 STi and love it, and came from a 2008 STi and some other cars before that with good power. (2004 Cobra, 2011 5.0, 2001 Cobra, 99 Cobra, 97 Vette, 93 5.0) Since having the STi I've been a turbo / awd convert.

At any rate, we were impressed with driving the automatic Evo, which I was surprised at because I hate automatics generally. We are going to test drive a stickshift so she can decide which one she wants, and then will probably have an STi and Evo in the stable which will be very fun!

My question for you more knowledgeable users/owners, is the automatic difficult to modify and add power to? I've started researching mods here and there already, and found some talking about clutch slipping with the auto once adding power, and it's difficult to tune for or mess with? What's the reasonable expectation for 'safe' daily driver power mods on the auto? Is it more of a 'leave it stock / stage 1' kind of deal? My wife is similar to me in that she likes to add HP to the cars she owns, so I wanted to make the 'right choice' if I were to take the Evo to around stage 2-ish.

I plan on calling Cobb tuning up in Plano to get their opinion as well tomorrow, but thought I would ask the community none-the-less.

Anyway, glad to be aboard, potentially, and hello to everyone.

If properly modified and tuned the SST has no problem holding reasonable power. Cobb has done some very impressive builds with the SST transmission.

^What he said. There are two things you can do to rest your nerves about the SST. SSP Transmission Cooler, and if you want to not worry about the clutch Jacks Transmissions have a clutch upgrade for the SST that takes care of and slippage worries. All in all the SST can handle Stage 2 pretty well

If I were to get a SST-equipped car my first mod would be an AMS SST cooler before beginning with the power mods. Just remember to stay up on your maintenance and change the tranny fluid & filter regularly.

What these guys said are true, power can be had with the SST, just have to be considerable to the SST tranny as far as fluids, maint, modification should you choose to track or run higher then 380+ HP/TQ

Well I'm part of the family now. Wife loved the stickshift so we now have a 2014 Black EVO GSR and a 2013 STi. I hope they play nice if I park them close to each other lol. Will post some pics when I can, wicked tired from drive home.

Not just clutch pack upgrade but upgrading your seals would be wise since its the most common of all problems that come with the SST

They're not gonna play nice if you mod them equally and your wife dusts you on a backroad.

Congrats on having both!

Yeah the more I research the more I realize the Subaru's new nick name will be 'school bus' while the EVO gets all bragging rights! Quite honestly though, I just took a long drive in my STi after driving nothing but the EVO for two days, and they are just both really fun cars in different ways. The STi is definitely more cushy suspension wise, but I don't find the EVO stock suspension to be too harsh at all either. They just feel different to drive, though the EVO is BEGGING for a six speed. All in all love them both, can't wait to see what mods make the EVO feel like. (I've never ridden in, or driven an EVO prior to owning this one, so have no idea what these feel like with some modifications)

Should be fun...
