Should I get an Evo or 3000gt VR4?
I am currently driving a 5 speed 2003 Mitsubishi lancer es. It's completely stock besides the SR-S Cat Back I put on it because the other one had rusted out. I keep up with maintenance, but I have done an extensive amount of research and figured that even if I were to rebuild my 4g94 and turbo it, it still wouldn't get me above 300 horsepower after spending a lot of money into the build.
Im more of a performance kind of guy rather than looking faster than what I really am (Being a Ricer) and I'm honestly tired of losing races, so I have come to the conclusion of getting either a 3000gt VR4 or an Evo. Which one would be a better car as far as price and availability for parts, reliability, and performance? Either one still beats my Lancer.*

I can tell you right now that the VR4 is going to be a lot of maintenance, and you'll toss a lot of money into it. Definitely not as reliable as a newer Evo X. As much as I do like the VR4's I'd go with an Evo that has a warranty.

The reason I'm considering the VR4 is because it's a V6, awd just like the Evo, I can buy one off of Craigslist for under $6000, and still be pretty fast right off the bat. Turbo it, and I'm already at least at 300 hp or more with room for more power. Idk how good the VR4 engine is because I have never thought to possibly get one until now so I haven't done much research about it. I'd be doing most of the work myself so labor for either VR4 or Evo wouldn't be an issue. I have heard the VR4's are pretty heavy, mostly because it's an awd

Well, I'll look into the evo, I just don't want to count out the VR4 as an option just yet. It's because of the possibility of having a lot power because of the V6 DOHC and turbocharging it

If you are indeed talking about buying a regular 3000GT and adding a turbo, then keep in mind it will not be AWD.

I meant as in putting in a bigger turbo and tuning it, sorry about that. Also i must have been looking up the wrong specs because i didn't realize that it was 320 horsepower stock. I did mention that I haven't done a lot of research about the VR4 lol so that explains the whole mix up too

I agree that parts may be hard to find for it. I don't know a lot about modding a 3000GT VR4.

I love the look of the '97 vr4, but damn they are a hard and expensive build. OP didn't say anything about a X that I saw, so maybe price is an issue and therefore 8/9? 6k for a 2 decade old car that is about reliable as a 90's mitsu, is a lot to ask. I was looking long ago and decided a 90 gsx was a better choice in the track aspect for availability of parts and a more recognizable motor. Also to consider, any internal upgrade will cost roughly double. 2 cylinder heads. 4 cams/shafts. 32 valves/springs. and a transverse mounted v6 is seriously a tight squeeze under that hood. 3gt is a sweet car, but lets face it. This is EvoM, we are biased. haha
just my .02

I like them, they are pretty reliable, except for the transfer case problem they have. If I remember correctly the transfer case will just lock up cause all 4 tires to lock up no matter what speed your going.

15 years ago, you had your pick of a a 3000GT VR4 or an Eclipse GSX. Even then, the Eclipse won out. The 3000GT VR4's are stout cars but they are heavy and don't take to mods as easily as the 4G63.
And there would be no comparison to an Evo VIII or IX vs a 3000GT VR4. No matter how cheap you get the VR4, you'll spend more getting it up to where an 4G63 Evo already exists than the cost of buying that Evo.
