having problems removing screw plugs

Sure, get a small flat blade screw driver and slide it under the collar and apply a little upward pressure---that will allow the threads to catch and unscrew---then you can pull it out. Get on ebay and buy a bag of screw thingies--what ever they are called, and just pop them all the way out next time and replace them as needed---much simpler. good luck.

Try holding the outer part with your fingers, or like stated above use a flat head. Either pry it up, or try holding it down. Don't use a lot of force on the screw itself, or you'll just keep pushing it back down and it'll keep spinning.
