Exhaust pops and crackles

I know our exhausts pop and crackle with test pipes. I have always noticed that my pops don't seem to be coming from the tail pipe but seems to come from right underneath me. At first I thought I had an exhaust leak so I replaced all the gaskets and made sure everything was tight but still sounds like it's coming from the front of the care instead of the rear.

Am I going crazy?

It's igniting in the exhaust tract.

slightly unrelated, but you mentioned the pop and crackle. Does anyone know what causes the exhaust to sound like a gurgling noise? not sure if that is bad or not but sure sounds awesome.

Especially when downshifting

I think moparfan was just referring to unburnt fuel that ignites in the hot exhaust system. With a test pipe installed, it is easier to hear these sounds because it is not being muffled by a cat. I run a test pipe as well and although I don't hear pops and cracks from the front of the vehicle, I definitely hear them out of the rear and sometimes feel the concussion underneath when that unburnt fuel ignites either from lifting off the gas or rev match downshifting. It also may seem like those sounds are coming from the front due to acoustics and where your vehicle is in relation to a concrete wall for example on an overpass or underpass.

hmm I guess that could be it but I don't pass any tunnels or walls usually on my commute. just straight open roads. It is probably nothing but just something that I noticed.

I really thought I had a leak somewhere that air was getting in to combust in the O2 housing or something but I can't find any leaks at all.

Pops and crackles are awesome, but if there is too much of it because of either mods or the tune, could it shorten the lifespan of the turbocharger?

Theres so much debate on this, but no one seems to know let alone have any evidence. Anti Lag? Sure. But pops and crackles shouldn't be harmful. Hell, some people retard the timing on low load-high RPM cells just for the intimidation factor of loud pops and bangs.

I actually like when my exhaust pops. It happens every once in a while, so when it does I get a little smirk on my face. I'd actually like it to crackle and pop just a little more often to be honest. It's a fun sound.
