I used brake cleaner (contains tetrachloroethylene, which is used in dry cleaning fluid) to clean some seats that I bought from a junkyard. They were absolutely covered in dirt and grease, and I really thought I would never get them even remotely clean, but they came out looking new! If you use brake cleaner for anything other than touch ups, I recommend removing the seat cover so you can wash the chemical smell out of it afterward.

I don't know about steam cleaners, but I doubt they get hot enough to melt foam.
Soap and water works. Automotive upholstery cleaner works too (it's in the "Soap and wax and other cleaning **** for cars" section of the store).
On the one hand, a can of upholstery cleaner has a built in brush on the top, making it easier to get in to the nooks and crannies. On the other, you already have soap and water.

I got a 8$ bottle of mothers leather/suede cleaner from wallmart. Used it on my MR seats and wow it came out nice
Sprayed the seat, let it sit for about 5 mins, then scrubbed with a clean microfiber hard. let air dry and they looked brand new
