1. Mix soap and warm water in a bucket.
2. Put on flannel pajamas, giggling intensely.
3. Sit in bucket, giggling intensely.
4. Get out of bucket, giggling intensely.
5. Clench, to remove excess water, giggling intensely.
6. Scoot around on seat, giggling intensely.
7. Pat dry towel on seat until lightly damp, giggling intensely.
8. Allow to dry, giggling intensely.

I used brake cleaner (contains tetrachloroethylene, which is used in dry cleaning fluid) to clean some seats that I bought from a junkyard. They were absolutely covered in dirt and grease, and I really thought I would never get them even remotely clean, but they came out looking new! If you use brake cleaner for anything other than touch ups, I recommend removing the seat cover so you can wash the chemical smell out of it afterward.

Would a steam cleaner damage/melt the styraphoam stuff that the seats are made out of?

I don't know about steam cleaners, but I doubt they get hot enough to melt foam.
Soap and water works. Automotive upholstery cleaner works too (it's in the "Soap and wax and other cleaning **** for cars" section of the store).
On the one hand, a can of upholstery cleaner has a built in brush on the top, making it easier to get in to the nooks and crannies. On the other, you already have soap and water.

I got a 8$ bottle of mothers leather/suede cleaner from wallmart. Used it on my MR seats and wow it came out nice

Sprayed the seat, let it sit for about 5 mins, then scrubbed with a clean microfiber hard. let air dry and they looked brand new
