Winter Wheels and Tires
Just starting a thread for sizing and snow tires. I want to throw some steelies on so i can get a narrower tire/wheel on which would be better for snow.
Anyone have any information on the most narrow tires you can get on there.
I would also want tires with a thicker sidewall, hence and small rim. Can we even fit 17"s with these brakes?
I am from Canada so winter tires are a must.

Nice Find!
In Summary:
Dunlop Winter Sport M3
http://www.tirerack.com/tires/Spec.j...e1=yes&place=0
$154 each for 245/45VR17 (25.7" Diameter Tire)
VS
$197 each for 245/40VR18 (25.7" Diameter Tire)
Also with the 17" size you can find several other brands in the $150 range with some Blizzak's on closeout right now for $119 each! I checked the 235/45-17 sizes and they were also around $140-$150 starting ranges for prices with slightly smaller diameters.
In Summary:
TE37 with Neova AD07 235/45R17
This shows it's quite possible, clears caliper's both ways. Most 17's with the correct offset will indeed fit GSR / MR.

It would depend on the spoke design and width of the wheel. But as a generalization 8.5's that work (any diameter) are +12 to 38; 9.0 should be between +15 to +32; and 9.5's being +22 to +29. Lower the offset more flush the wheel with the fender, or more it sticks out.

$117 - MSW Type 12 (17x8)
http://www.tirerack.com/wheels/Wheel...All&sort=Price
Offset: 40mm
Backspacing: 6.14"
Bolt Pattern: 5-114
Rec. Tire Size:235/45-17
Weight: 23.5lbs
Anyone have an idea if these wheels would fit? Since they are only 17x8 I'm not sure how that will effect the fitment over the calipers. Gettting a winter wheel and tire package for under $1000 would be great since a low price 18" setup is going to cost around $1500.

I remember trying out some summer tires on a fresh blanket of snow once thinking "All Wheen Drive will save me" ... hahaha
Granted this was when I was younger and my 2nd year of ownership of an Eclipse GSX but still summer tires have no business touching snow period. I could sort of spin all 4 to accelerate but then there was this whole thing about slowing down that had the ABS activating for about half a mile before slowing down again.
As a test I went to a parking lot that was empty and did some stops with the ABS and then with the ABS fuse pulled and indeed if you could control the step out of the rear end the non ABS had a good 20-30% better stopping distances due to snow damming up on the locked up wheels.
I got snow tires mounted the next day that I was too lazy to put on and the next snow fall I had to actively work to get them to break lose, was literally night and day. All season "mud and snow" work ok in the snow when the tread is new and deep but once they start to wear they really fall behind dedicated snow tires.

My first snow day (sometime in early 2004) in OKC with the Evo was.... entertaining with Advans. It was like driving on hockey pucks. I did a nice ballet in traffic to everyones horror. Somehow I managed to drift my way between cars into a grassy ditch. Being a Floridian, I had no idea that summer tires = bad in the snow. I also assumed AWD will save me.
BTW - I have an extra set of stock Evo X rims if you would rather go that route. They where destined for my IX, but someone is buying it... which means I'll be getting a X myself.
