Tip on gaining access to front bumpstops to trim

I haven't come across this topic in the suspension forum. Here's a tip to gain access to the front bumpstops in order to trim them when doing a spring install.

I just installed a set of WORKS lowering springs and used a hacksaw to cut 1/2 to 3/4 inch off the bottom end of the front and rear bumpstops to avoid coming down on them due to the loss of suspension travel.

The bumpstops in the front and rear are covered with dust covers to keep the strut from getting road grit into them. The bumpstops on the rear struts are easy to get to - once your remove the strut spring, just push up on the dust cover and it slides off the bump stop.

The dust cover on the fronts are harder to remove and reinstall. Inside the dust cover on the bump stop itself is a black retaining ring about a 1/3 inch tall. The ring stiffens up the bumpstop so the dust cover doesn't come off. It takes a little bit of force to yank the dust cover down by hand and over the retaining ring but it does come off.

To reinstall the dust cover on the bumpstop remove the retaining ring. With the ring off, the bump stop is more malleable and you can squeeze the bump stop in and stretch the dust cover out to put the dust cover back into place. After it's in place, I used the tip of large screw driver to press the retaining ring back into position on the bump stop.
