For guys with VIII/IX's these are also on sale:
235/40/17 $92
245/40/17 $$78
These aren't the best tires out there, but they do just fine for around town and spirited driving. They'll be slower than star specs, RE-11s, AD08's, etc. on the autocross though. Think RT-615.

I had two sets on my WRX and used them as a street tire, not a track tire. They were super sticky, quiet, and I always got more than 20,000 miles on them even with plenty of negative camber. The sidewalls are not stiff which makes them a mediocre track tire but did give them a smoother ride than tires with a stiffer sidewall. I liked them more than Michelin PS2 but not as much as the Bridgestone RE070. They don't get slippery when hot like the Falken 615s.
Too bad they don't come in 245/18s.

goofygrin, what size wheels do you have for your X that fit both the car and the nicely priced tires? I would love to see a set of wheels thrown in too! I am in need of that second set of wheels for tracking etc and honestly would prefer to keep all tires and wheels for street and track interchangeable with stock wheels.

I'm going to throw them on the stock wheels for around town. I've got 18x10.5's for my track tires though.
Here's 265/35/18's on 8.5's on a BMW:

I picked up 8 of them. I was going to go with a nice set of A/S tires to get better tread wear (I currently commute about 100 miles a day in the evo for work); however, at this price I couldn't resist trying them out. Most reviewes that I read around the web were fairly positive, and I wanted to step up to a wider rim and keep my winter tires on the stock rims, so I pulled the trigger (however I won't be mounting them until next April - May probably...
They did arive today... and I do like the tread pattern

You can do 265/35 on the 8.5" wheel. I've come across several posts on different forums from drivers who have done it - even a Mitsubishi dealer in So Cal.
Not sure how well your car will handle though. Naysayers admonish drivers who are tempted to put 265s on 8.5" wheels that an oversized tire will bulge and squirm in the turns during spirited driving, which lowers driver confidence and speed.
I'd be tempted to go with the 265s on the stock wheel if I could come across posts from drivers who have 265s on a 8.5" wheel, go for canyon drives, and can vouch that the car handles great.
