TPMS nightmare

I have aftermarket wheels on my car and had four OEM Mitsubishi sensors from the Tire Rack installed because I'm sick of the damn warning message that is stuck on all the time. I had to get the tires fitted at a place other than the dealership because they couldn't guarantee not to damage the wheels. I then took it to the dealership to have the TPMS programmed, but they say they couldn't do it and likely one of the sensors is faulty. However, they couldn't tell me which one because they said they didn't know.

Can anyone suggest what I should do? How do I locate the missing sensor if Mitsu can't? If I knew which one was faulty I could get it removed and sent back to Tire Rack for exchange.

Any TPMS reader device can check for a response from a sensor. It's placed next to each sensor one at a time and checks for a reading. If no reading, then it's a bad sensor. Check if your tire mounting place can do it. You don't have to dismount the tires or anything; reader just needs to be close to the sensor.

The ECU sync though with the TPMS has to be done by Mitsu AFAIK

My dealership quoted me $150 to determine which sensor was faulty and another $150 to reprogram the sensors once everything was back in working order. Absolute robbery.

Will ask around to see if a tire mounting place can do the diagnosis for cheaper. I can't imagine it is more than 5 mins of work.

It's not. You literally walk around the car holding the device to each tire checking for a reading to find the bad one.

The ECU resync probably isn't that much work either...but stealership has you there because I don't think many places can do the resync.

Call around. Any place with a Wheelrite Tech400 can detect the bad sensor and reprogram the ECU. More tire places have this device than you might think. You don't need the Mitsu tool.

Tech400 can read but lacks obd support, at least for my 2010. Went through the whole thing with bartec.

$150 is alot, i went to a mitsu dealer and they ended up doing something a little different to program mine, i think he said what they did is they took out all the air out of each tire, and then filled them all back up to spec at the same time, and i guess it bypasses the programming or something, i may be wrong but thats how the service writer explained it to me, they did it for $50. Its atleast worth a try to ask them if they can do anything like that.
