brakes worn in 11,800miles?

Hey everyone,

Ive had my Evo x for almost a year it has done 11,800miles and I need to replace the brakes. Does this seem right?

A little info on the car;

It has NEVER been tracked. Its a 2009 model bought in March 2010 so it was sitting unused for a while, I bought it with 12miles on the clock. I have driven the car everyday. I can imagine I have been harder on it than others would have with a brand new car however, I have never tried burnouts/donuts or things like that.

Just the front and rear pads will cost me $1050 +labour from my local mitsu dealer so I am curious to know if this will continue to happen regularly.

At times during corners the car has used its super AWD to keep the front end under check to prevent under-steer, might be a stupid question but does that increase brake wear?

Thanks for all the help!

So the car has 23,800 in it total, not 11,800?

The mileage may seem low, but if you're constantly on the brakes, they will still wear. Do youself a favor and read the how-to section before letting the dealer rape you!

Do not let the dealer replace your brakes, buy some aftermarket pads and do it yourself.

Not sure where Chu learned his math?

math fail

12 MILES (not 12k miles).

Def don't take it to the dealer. Do it yourself, it's very easy. Or check local shops.

^This.

Thanks for your feedback guys. I did actually see the how-to on changing the pads however, The $1050 is for the pads alone! and their labour is usually very reasonable. So changing the pads myself would still cost me the same minus labour.

However, I have found a place that stock Hawk ceramic brake pads, Hawk performances HP plus and Hawk HPS pads at a much cheaper price. Do you guys think these are a suitable replacement? My car is completely stock (at the moment!) and if so should I just go for the ceramics?

Thanks again

You should really be reading this. I do not recommend HPS, they are a terrible pad IMO. Many good options out there, stay away from the OE stuff, unless you like wasting money.

Thanks for your input, working my way through linked thread . Unfortunately where I live the only local option is the stock pads or the Hawk pads I stated above and even those I would have to get a friend to bring over from a different country for me! I guess I will have to look into ordering some online.

OP: Why do you think that your pads need replacing?

(Lots of people see the shiny ring on the rotor's face, near to the hat, and think that they've hit the wear bars; they haven't; they merely have some crud trapped there.)

when I brake from 70mph the brakes make this crazy howling noise like an airplane. I'm pretty sure the brakes have gone.

Howling can be a variety of things. Take a front wheel off and look to see if you have pad left. I'll bet you do. You can't use up a set of pads in 12k miles without some serious braking.

are you sure thats pads alone? not pads and rotors? labor is prolly cheap cause the dealer is ripping you off with the parts...

if it turns out you do need pads, buy some aftermarket ones, much cheaper

you asked about stability control wearing the brakes. yes, they'll wear the brakes MUCH faster, but only the rear pads. it works by applying the rear brakes to pitch the car. at the track, with ASC on, my rear rotor temps were about 30% higher than my fronts! With ACS off, they're about 30% cooler.
