Why are the 2005s so much quicker and faster than the 2003s/2004s?

Proper tune and that engine ain't going nowhere. People already run 28psi on these motors w/ the stock turbo and alky, how would that be any more dangerous with/without cams??

The general rule is for every 100hp over stock, you go one range "colder" on your spark plugs. This has nothing to do with "colding" by 100 degrees. You just go from range 7 (stock) to range 8 (colder by 1 range). I have a feeling your Evo won't last long...

I have rode in a 05 MR and I have to say it is a lot smoother car then my 03, and I have to say the Bilstiens add a lot to that. Also the 05 shifting is a lot smoother as well, though I haven't had my syncros checked or changed yet, but I have no problems with mine. My 03 and my buddys 05 MR don't have the exact mods, he has a cat-back while mine is stock except for the XEDE, and we both know I can hand his *** to him. Eliminate the 10.5 hotside and the 03/04 are the same power wise to the 05. Come on guys their the same engine. Now when tuning comes into play the 05's run just like the 03/04. Now the Evo IX is going to be a different beast. new compressor housing, plus they are utilizing the MIVEC which I think will make it a lot faster then both the 03/04 and 05. Also don't forget they will have the 10.5 hotside as well.
I'll be looking into trading in my VIII for a IX.

Anyway, when tuning comes into play, 05s don't run just like 03/04s, they run better, unless the 03/04 also has a 10.5 hotside.

Until a few weeks ago the only EVO I had driven was my 03. It's stock but has an MR suspension. While my car was in having the syncros replaced I tried an 05 VIII. I was surprised by the difference. It seemed to be alot more than just a few horsepower and a few ft/lbs of torque. There was better shifting, some improvements in noise levels, and, of course, a gear box without metal fragments spinning around in the fluid helped. But low end power in particular seemed better but the specs say it's not much different. After my gearbox was rebuilt the differences seemed smaller but still there. I guess Mitsu has done more in the way of refinement over the years than the specs alone can tell. And if the drivetrain and engine run smoother you are going to make more use of the available power. I'd say the 05 in stock form is a better EVO than the 03 in stock form.
