Even the service manual won't really prove much of anything. Anyone paid much attention to the 2003 owners manuals? They still have our cars as being equipped with the Evo 7 adjustable rear wing.
Although I am a supporter of calling the Non-RS and Non-MR Evo 8's as GSR's, I still wouldn't use the service manual as your proof.

Hey guys, Mitsubishi didnt called our EVOs in the states GSR's, but that doesnt mean its not a GSR. Just Check the name, our cars in the states are only called "Lancer Evolution" because its the first in the US market, but for us its still a EVOLUTION VIII? Right?

There are many "mistakes" in it from when they didn't switch over from the Evo 7 to the Evo 8. This is because the 7 and 8 are essentially the same car with different body panels and such. You'll find drawings of the Evo 7 inside the 2003 Evo 8 Tech. Manual.

Last post, I promise:
The USDM Evolution is based on the JDM Evo VII GSR (7), and it's slightly different from all the Evo VIII's in the world - just like the USDM IX is/will be different here than abroad. our 8 is basically a 7.5... I also have the Shop Manual on CD and on the:
"START HERE" page it simply says "2003 Lancer Evolution"
In the forward, it says "2003 Lancer Evolution VIII"
In the Vehicle Identification Number List - "Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VIII"
General Data "ct9a sngfzl 2m"
I did a search of the complete file and got this: "No occurences of: gsr were found in the document", but that may only be the case in the original version of the 2003 USDM Manual.
In 2003, there was no RS or MR available in the US, so there was no need to designate the Evolution GSR to differentiate it. The shop manuals that people may have seen are probably inclusive of the 2004-2005 models, which would have the GSR model to differentiate between it and the MR and RS.
It may seem from my posts that I care about this, but I really don't. Just passing along info that I've found
