Are Evos THAT expensive to own?

Local dealer has an Evo on the lot, asking 21,000 or something. Knowing these guys that translates into 18k.

The sad part.

Any way, reading up on ownship experinces and R&T's review. Seems the bigggest problem is the clutch wears out real fast. Past that, it would seem owner stupidity.

http://www.roadandtrack.com/ar...ber=2

R&T claimed they spend $6,000 in thier year test drive on maintence. That is simply unreal in my opinion, for ANY CAR. They also used "16 Yokohama A-046 Advan tires' and two sets of brakes for only 50,000 miles of driving time. The brakes I can understand, even more so if it's just pads, the tires and $800 in Dealers Services I'm having a hard time with.

Can more "normal" all-weather tires be used on the Evo to keep wear down? I'm not in any way familiar with tires, brands and types. I just know the sportier they are, the worse they are in the winter and the faster they go bald. Also in another spot they mentioned "Six Michelin Pilot A/S tires for $1667". So this damn thing ate 24 tires, which includes a set of Michelins that cost almost $300 a pop?

That is a set of tires every 8k miles.

Too many people buy these cars who can not afford them. It's not about how much the actual car costs...it's what it costs to keep it driving. Gas, tires, mods, etc. Sure you can keep it entirely stock and never drive it hard so you get ok gas mileage and your tires last 8-10,000 miles...but what's the point in owning an Evo if you're not going to have some fun with it? Also, once you put the first mod on...it's VERY addicting. I'd say unless you have some parents who are going to pay for everything (and you should be beat down if you do ) or have a good paying job and can afford to have the car without saying you aren't going to eat 1 week a month...you shouldn't get an Evo. Just my .02

I thought the EVO wasn't that bad until I had to fork over $1600 for a clutch replacement( 14k miles ), $280 on attorney fees & court costs( speeding ) and I'm lookin' at having to get some new shoes( another grand at least ) in the next month or two. I've had the car for a little over a year and a half and do have alot of fun with it, so I guess it's a pay to play thing but damn, I haven't spent 3k total on my 1994 Escort in the last 5 years...

Its actually not that bad. These cars can out perform cars that cost a lot more and I'm sure that guy with the porsche pays a lot more for brakes and tires, than I do. You can change the tires with some "normal" ones and put on a set of autozone brake pads to save a few bucks but it sacrafices performance. I wouldn't do it on my car, because it kinda defeats the purpose of owning an evo.

You also have to take into account that these guys are putting some serious Mileage on this car also. If you look in the unforseen events for Repair and replacement it says two big words.... ALCAN RALLY. What do think that did to some of the brakes and tires they had mounted on that car?

Alcan Rally damage: replaced two front axle cross bars and left front strut and strut insulator ($601), 4-wheel alignment ($49), replaced front spoiler, front bumper clip and various shields and covers ($1342).

If you plan on taking your car to a Rally you should probably expect things like this to happen along with tire replacements and Brake pads. You have to take into account what you'd be buying the car for. Daily driver only, maybe mix in a little track time. Its relative to how and where you're going to drive the car.

Also if you look at the average cost per Mileage since 1997 in long term tests, cars are usually running around $.40/mile the Evo is $.44, that's not a huge difference.

On the other hand, if you think about it you're also not going to be throwing down $25-$50 for front brake pads as you would on a domestic. This is an Evo after all. They said $255 for front pads, maybe a little high for daily driving i'm sure you could find something a little cheaper without sacrificing too much performance. And why spend $973 letting the dealer change pads when you could do it yourself or have a friend help you out. Hell, there's bound to be someone in your area that's a member on here that would do it for $100. You just saved yourself $500-$700 right there.

IMHO, these cars are not expensive at all. The parts are a little more then Honda stuff, but less then any European car.

I just did the EVO's first oil change
Filter $3
5qts Redline 10-40 $45

My 1991 BMW M3
Filter $15
8qts Redline 20-50 $70

Both are filters from the dealer.
BMW hawk HPS pads $350 set
EVO Hawk HPS pads $275 set.

BMW header $1400
EVO 8 header $300

I think the real problem is people are used to cars now that don't need any maintiance at all. Spark plugs that go 100,000 mi, lifetime fluids in the trans & diff, etc...
Now we have the EVO that needs all the fluids changed, it comes with performance brakes & tires. The stock tires should not last much more then 13,000mi & if you push it then they will wear even faster.

If things are a concern for you, leave it stock, don't buy performance tires & brakes for it, just enjoy it, a stock EVO is all a around better then 75% of the cars out there.

I think the clutch wear is from people taking off from stoplights. The cars are SLOW off the line, unless you do a clutch drop in them. This will eat any clutch with a 300hp car!

When I rebuilt the engine in my M3, the new sport clutch could not hold the new found torque of my engine, and I ate it up at one track day.

The bottom line is, if you drive it like you stole it, it's going to steal your wallet to keep it that way.

i just laugh at the people who think an evo is expensive to maintain, my buddy has one and hes 19, pays for it himself, and he has no extended fees other than gas and his second set of tires, if your going to continuously put advans on the car and if you change the oil every 1000 miles or something absurd like that, then yes your going to spend a lot of money. learn to downshift, you won't eat up your brakes so bad, i don' see how people are going through brakes, driving daily, every like 20,000, thats rediculous.

A lot of people that go through brakes, tires, clutches, etc. track their cars a lot. If you don't do wear intensive activities like going to the track regularly, these parts will last almost as long as on a regular commuter car.

I was going to ask the same thing.

I find it pretty hard for someone living on their own at 19 to afford an EVO unless mommy and daddy pay for it. But you never know...

^ Yup. Unless he has one hell of a job, that is pretty hard to believe. The only reason I am going to be able to afford mine (i'm 20) is because I just moved back to my parents house and don't many bills at all now. I also don't plan on having any bills (rent, etc) for a while, so that leaves me a good amount of money every month with which to get an Evo.

I've owned the car since March 2003. My maintenance has included a new (ACT) clutch at 17k miles (due to track use), I went through 2 set of Advans (the 2nd set was used), changed out trainy/transfer case fluids at 17k, at 30k I changed out my pads and there was still plenty of pad left. The rest of my ownership cost has been in modding the car.
MPG stock 18 - 22mpg. MPG after mods and tuning (about 320whp) is 17 - 26mpg.

Main problems with the car other then above;
carpet anchor will not stay down on driver's side, carbon fiber on the spoiler fadded and was replaced under warranty
I would reccommend less aggressive tires like KDW 2s.

It's not a bad car to own, but you should not buy it unless you are financially comfortable.
