If the check engine light is on, and there are no faults it is pointless checking the gas cap,
the gas cap not being tight is not going to just turn the light on by itself, it will throw a evap leak fault,
If the check engine light is on, and there are no faults stored, there is probably an issue with your instrument cluster, or the harness going to it, something is triggering the light, either a short in the harness or a faulty cluster itself.

well what i did was i disconected the battery and the light went off !! i did some driving and it hasnt got back!! also the time when i got the light i was driving in 5th gear at about 80mph and the engine did stutter or hestitated twice and the light came on took it to mitsu they hooked up the diagnostic reader and there where no codes!! do you think i missed fired and the computer registered the code but then it erased it but left the light on !!!

Im sorry for not explaining it better,
the instrument cluster, the actual unit in the dash that has all the gauges and lights in it. that unit itself could actually be bad, its a bunch of things all connected together on an integrated circuit, if there is an internal problem with it causing the check engine light to come on, then the entire instrument cluster needs to be replaced, but also there could be a problem in the wiring harness that goes to the instrument cluster, such as a short.
one of these two things is probably what is causing your problem.

I wouldnt worry too much, When i first read your original post i didnt know there was an event that happened along with the light, i just thought the light was on and that was it,
it seems like everything is operating normally now, if there is an actual problem such as a misfire, it will eventually come back and set the light again along with a fault.
Probably nothing to worry about.

what i did before getting this missfire or stuttering i did use some NOS octane booster do you think this caused the missfire??
