Besides everyones opinions, the general rule of thumb would be to follow what the owners manuel tells you to do. take it easy for a few hundred miles then go out and have some fun.

I go above and beyond the manual. If they say 1000 miles, I go 1.5k to 2k. If they say limit the RPM to under 5k, I keep it around 4k.

I'm weird like that.

The manual does list the minimum mileage and the max RPM that they found to be the best break in route without annoying people. I can stand driving in stop and go for 1.5k to 2k miles...knowing that the motor is DEFINATELY broken in when I punch it after that.

After 5k I go from the manufacturers suggested motor oil to Royal Purple. Then you notice the engine smoothen out. You can really tell the difference in a mustang. I am not sure about an Evo.

Just follow the manual... why would you not follow something written by the people that built the car. There shouldn't be any need to drive under 5K after 600 miles if that's what Mitsu says.

You are breaking in other parts aswell as the motor ie breaks, clutch.....

Changing the oil after the break in period is always a good idea as well; dont know if that is listed in the manual as well.

I have questions here...
I might be getting the evo 200 Miles from my city for their excellent pricing...but driving 200 miles on the new SE...dosn't sound so good...Heard people saying don't cruise at same speed for long time so does this mean keep the RPM variable at freeways??
Any suggestions? Thanks!!

When speaking of breaking an engine in, pistons rings bedding into cylinder walls is the only thing that applies, nothing else matters. Bearing shells dont seat with conrods or mains, so forget about them.

You can read tons of good break in procedures with a quick search of google. Written by engine builders, that make their living working with this stuff.

this is how I will be breaking my ca18 in.

I took it real easy for about 600 miles. Those are the most critical after that you can drive it any way you want.
