Racial Profiling

I was wondering if any of my brethren have been pulled over or followed by the po-po just because of the fact you drive a sport compact and they make up a b.s. reason why they did it. I am saying this because this has happened to me on more than one occasion. In my case I believe it is because I am a black man. I can list every car and how many times I have been followed or pulled over.

1998 Eclipse-5 times
1994 300GT SL- 3 times
2000 Honda S2000-8 times
2006 EB IX- Just got it yesterday and today I was followed for 5 miles

Let me hear you if this has happened to you, let me know.

Back in the day when I lived up in Seattle, I had a '96 Eclipse with a few mods on it; nothing too wild, just exhaust, intake, rims, gauges, really. Anyway, I used to get followed all the time, but the worst one was when I accidentally discovered where the street racers gathered...

There was a 7-11 up in Renton/Kent area by the freeway and I was there getting a Snapple on the way to my friend's house. Well, as I was walking out to my car, when all these kids pull up in their Hondas and whatnot, so I kind of stayed to look at their cars and struck up a conversation with one of them.

Anyway, so the po po's showed up, blocked both exits to the parking lot and proceeded to start bullying everyone, saying we needed to leave. Well, after a few minutes and no one had left, so the cops started to get pissy. Someone finally was able to get it through to the pigs that since they had both exits blocked off, no one could leave. All the racer kids left and I was there by myself again, since there was a police car parked directly in front of my car. The cop is sitting there with his spotlight on me, yelling at me to get going. I told him that I couldn't with his car blocking me, so after about 10 minutes of this, he finally moves it.

I pull out of the lot and make a right to get to the intersection. The light turns green and I start going normally, no burnouts or fast or anything. The same cop gets behind me and puts on his lights. I pull over and he's like, "Why you going so fast?"

"I wasn't going fast, I was leaving a dead stop. You saw me leave the parking lot, remember?"

So he asks for my license, registration and insurance, all of which are in my name and all of which I hand to him. He comes back and asks if my car was stolen. I told him it was mine and he walks around to the front of the car and looks at my fog lights, questioning if they were legal. I told him they were stock, so they should be... he says the same thing about my hood (1G and 2G DSM's have that offset hood bump) which was stock also, then he starts giving me a hard time about my exhaust and carbon fiber taillight housings...

Well, another cop (a black dude) pulls up and the two of them start arguing. The second cop told the first one to leave me alone and that I wasn't part of the racer crew they were watching. The first one was saying that he thought my car was stolen and wanted to impound it. Finally, the second cop comes to my window and tells me to go ahead and go. I told him I didn't have my paperwork back, so he gets it from the other cop and gives it back to me. He apologized and basically held the other cop at bay while I drove off.

Yeah, I'm black too

wow, sorry to hear that guys. that's totally ridiculous and uncalled for. why would he ask if the car was stolen when it's in YOUR name...ugh. and the way cops always park, their cars end up in the middle of everything, creating more chaos and obstruction of traffic flow.
is the racial profiling a common thing in your areas? here in jersey (esp northern nj) we have a pretty large minority population and many cops being minorities themselves. although i can't speak from experience, being white, when someone gets pulled over, it's a good chance they'll be colored simply because of the population ratio.
well just try to keep it cool and don't give them a reason to throw you on the hood of their car. maybe you can get their badge number and file a complaint with the township, go to the mayor, local newspapers, etc. Police depts. hate getting attention from the media.

Hell im white and I have been pulled over twice in the last three weeks. Its an unfortunate circumstance that you have to deal with blatant racisim in the police ranks. Good luck with staying out of trouble (not that its entirly up to you)

Not going to agree with the racial profiling (I'm African). However if you read this forum (and many others that deal with single purpose vehicles like ours) you'll see that the Coppers are not total dimwits and they know what's up.

Do they have a right for a traffic stop? Yes, it's called probable cause. Are you going to get arrested or have your car impounded? Probably not as long as you're an upstanding citizen and all your stuff are in order.

I am not too much worried about it myself.

Comming back to work from lunch yesterday, there was a motorcycle Cop hiding behind some bushes at a school zone. He glared at me as I rolled by him at 19mph with his laser gun shooting at me (V1 was going ape shiat). I glared back at him and waived.

They are there to protect and serve and we need to hold them accountable by not giving up our rights. I would have filed a complaint at the PD and copied my local newspaper editor personally if what Evo2kLee wrote happened to him.

Don't have warrants, drugs, in your car, have insurance proof, current license and just enjoy the police parade/escort behind you

KartaRailed, I am from Jax so you know how it is there. 3 of the 4 vehicles I had when I was in Jax. I hated going to my old neighborhood and have a pig run my plates. I mean this is a serious problem especially since I got started having import cars in my line up. This never occurs when I am in my Expedition. This is my thought on it. If I am in violation of any laws and I get pulled over, I would have no problem with it. But just because of what vehicle being driven gives no permission for any pig to harass anyone regardless of color or vehicle being driven.

Wow, bitter much? First of all, you getting pulled over for driving an import is not 'racial profiling'. You guys talk about getting harrassed for driving a modded car, then have to throw in the point later that you are black. So what? I have a black friend and all the cars he's ever driven have been modified. Bagged truck, loud *** camaro SS, and mustang cobra. He never complains about being racially profiled by anyone. If you get pulled because of the car you drive, as long as you have your papers, you should be fine.

A lot of guys who drive cars similar to yours are out racing and killing people so just be happy cops are doing their job. It might be a inconvenience sometime but deal with it. I was installing a new head unit in my car at night in my friends apartment parking lot on new years eve and a cop rolled up and questioned me. Asked if it was my car, and checked my license, registration, and VIN number to make sure. Of course everything was fine, so I thanked him for keepin us safe and he was very nice about it and went on his way. I'm just happy that if someone was trying to steal my ****, the cops are on the ball about it.

One day if some guy gets pulled over for some stupid reason and ends up having guns or drugs, you'd be happy the cops got him off the street right? If you've done nothing wrong, you should have nothing to hide. Race doesn't have anything to do with it.

well it sounds like what evo2k6lee had happen to him had nothing to do with his race, but rather suspicion of him being part of a racing group. keep in mind, a racing group that probably drives like jags, does burnouts, and probably causes accidents. you werent a part of that group and once they found that out, you were cut scott free. its the cops jobs to pull racers over. they get pulled over enough and get enough tickets, they stop racing, simple enough. as many people that complain about the cops harrassing imports, im sure they cops get twice as many complaints from people complaining about them racing and driving like jerks.

this is the nature of the evo and all sports cars guys. you get followed, you get pulled over, etc. if you have your stuff inline you get set free. same like you dont buy the evo for great gas milage or for a comfortable daily commute. get used to it. ****, im as white as day and i get pulled over every other day in my RR IX, wingless too.

dcorn I respect what you are saying. But this has happened to me too many times. It may be different where you are from but I am speaking on my experiences in the recent years. Race has played a big part in these experiences of mine. I have had friends with the same vehicles and nothing happens, and sometimes we rode out together. I will admit that I have a big beef with cops where i'm from because I have had family members and friends treated wrong by the same people that are supposed to uphold the law. Even when something happens to my family members by a criminal, they were not there when they were desperately needed. Like that old song "911 is a joke"

I think the point a lot of people are trying to make is that there is some sort of "double profiling" that they are victim to since they drive an import and are black.

I don't have any real input since:
1: I'm not black
2: I haven't been profiled for driving an import

I'm sure that it does happen though, and I'm sure it could be for both reasons. Sometimes people will yell "profiling" when there is a just reason for an act, but I do not believe that being black or driving an import would make someone more likely to break the law.

I remember an instance in my home town where a local store had placed "inventory control" systems on several products geared toward black consumers. A lot of people tried to say they were profiling and trying to say that only black people were stealing from their store. The truth behind the matter was they their inventory report showed that the products they had "marked" made up over 90% of merchandise stolen from their store. it wasn't profiling, it was simply fact.

i must say i get followed quite often... dont get me wrong, im sure racial profiling happens, but, in this case, you are driving a car that sticks out and then if you get some *** who is still in the early 19th century, then you have 2 strikes before you even start to break the law. I've gotten pulled a few times and the cops make up a story in order to check my license and registration. I dont mind usually, because its a slap in their face everytime, but they always seem to do it when im pressed for time or have to take a **** lol

I understand, I know it could be completely different where you live and your personal reasons are your personal reasons. I've just seen so many threads on evom about kids complaining about cops pulling them over because they were asian or driving a car with a wing or this and that.

When you were followed 5 miles, maybe the cop happened to be going the same place you were. A cop rolled up behind me once and passed me, and I ended up following him for an hour on about 3 different highways before he turned off. I'm just saying you never know what the circumstances are with traffic cops.

Believe me, I've been pulled over in my mustang for stupid stuff. Once I was doing exactly the speed limit at 10pm and a cop pulled me because my exhaust smelled bad. Wrote me a $50 ticket for no cats. Recently I was given a speeding ticket at night without being radared or paced because the cop heard my loud exhaust.

Its all relative I guess. Thats all I have to say so I'll just spectate on the rest of this thread unless someone brings up a really stupid incident or comment
