Pros and Cons of 5 and 6 gears?
Hi guys. I tried hard to look for a post with this discussion, but nothing meaningful came up. I hope you guys can shed some objective truth on this topic.
what are the pros and cons of 5 and 6 gears in the Evo IX? I am having a hard time picking which transmission I want for my future new evo IX.
thanks, I really tried to look for a good thread for this, I couldnt find it.

there are a bunch of threads discussing this. try searching in depth a little more. there are a lot of different opinions on the topic. 6 speed is good for road racing and from what i heard the 5 speed is better for the quarter. there is a lot of other differences as well like smoothness of shift feel, gear strength, etc.

another thing to add, i am not 100% but i read that the IX has a revised gear set and 2nd drops the motor too low for some people's liking, personally i have driven a 5spd(mustang 5.0) and a 6 speed(svt focus) for about 1.5 years each i know its not an evo but just as a comparison with a 6 speed if u are religious with going thru all the gears it takes alot more work however i learned to skip shift with the 6 speed the 5 speed was a little nicer because 3rd and 4th are very expendable gears(they have alot more use than in a 6 speed) i have also read that the 6 speed mr's have been going out with more power during track days, again i have not driven 5spd and 6spd evo's back to back this is just my general opinion on 5 vs 6 speeds over all i would go for a 6 speed because there are more options for downshifting into power however spool-up might not be as quick as a 5 speed at the same speed then again the difference would be so minimal that you probably wouldn't notice it--Chris

I heard that gears 1-4 are identical between the 2 trannys... If this is true then the difference must be on 5th and 6th gear? is this true?
also going back on what speedracer said, can you tell me more about the other differences?

I probably wont take it to the track that much.... I see myself using this car more in the streets and maybe at the canyons. I will probably mod the car later on. Is it true that the 5 speed has a very slight advantage in terms of acceleration?

It seems the only difference between the 5 and 6 speed at 65mph is about 250rpm. I originally thought to buy the 6 speed thinking it would drop the cruise rpm down but it has little effect.
6th gear (6 Speed) = .69:1.00 w/ 4.58 final drive 65mph=2730rpm 90mph=3780rpm
5th gear (5 Speed) = .76:100 w/ 4.53 final drive 65mhp=2975rpm 90mph=4120rpm
After a bit of research I chose the 5 speed. There is no fuel milage advantage to the 6 speed and there really is no advantage for autocross type racing. For road racing the 6-speed 5th gear may help a bit to keep the car in a better power band for speeds between 105-120mph.
For some reason the advertised fuel economy for the 5 speed is a hair better than the 6 speed. IMHO save the money and go with the 5 speed.

Actaully you guys have it wrong. The 5 speed is the better tranny for road racing in. Search and see how many MR blew 4th whiloe road racing. Do the same on the 5 speed. Put it this way the more serious people who race that have a MR have swapped out the 6 speed for 5 speeds And the 1-3 gears are the same the rest are different

Interesting! I am having 4th grinds when coming from 5th or 6th gear.
Now, I am worried! Will take a look at that this weekend!
Thanks for the info!

My only complaint is the shift knob is so tiny. Like it was made for a girl's hand. That aluminum knob seems like it would work a bit better. Should have bought the damn thing while I was at the dealer.
