Ted,

The cause of pre-ignition or det to my understanding is heat. So when we say the standard evo runs into trouble around 23 psi, I suppose we are saying there is a significant build up of heat which the 93 octane fuel cannot resist?

Detonation is essentially a product of heat and pressure.

Wow you guys play it safe (nothing wrong with that). Here in Cali, tuners and lots of people say spiking to 23psi on 76 brand 91 **** is ok

What do you guys think about that?

If you have a way to monitor or log knock then you can try to run over 21 psi on an VIII or 23 psi on a IX, because with a gauge or by logging the ECU's timing retard you'll know when you've reached the knock threshold for the particular pump gas you're running.

If you can't read knock then you'd have no way of really knowing when you've reached the limit of a gasoline's knock resistance. You can't simply rely on your ear to tell you when your engine is detonating, because your ear won't warn you of innaudible detonation.

For a given tune on 93 oct, the only way to determine if a said amount of boost is optimal or safe for car is if your knocking, whether it's 17 psi or 33 psi, and it varies

What I say is demonstrate that it consistently produces more power than ~21 psi with a different ignition map. If it does, fine. If not, then what's the point?

Again, it isn't about 'no knock', as one can set the timing to make it run 30psi and 'no knock'. It's about finding the lowest boost pressure that delivers best torque. Anything beyond that just generates more heat.
