Thinking about JDM Rear bumper
So I just got rear ended today while sitting stopped at traffic on the highway. 7 car accident I was the last one to get tapped on the ***. It looked like 2 cars in the middle got totaled. Amazingly for the amount of damage no injuries at all.
So now since I have to replace my bumper I was thinking of going JDM since i like hte look, but i hear you have to take out the crash beam on us evo's for it to fit. Since i'm worried about getting rear ended again by some lunatic I really don't want to take it out. Is there any other options? A JDM look alike for US?

Yes, you'd need to modify the crash beam. A body shop should be able to do this for you, as it will require some cutting and rewelding. I must say that the car is about 3" shorter on the backside and it looks really nice. Kinda like putting the evo on exercise to get rid of a big rear end

I had the same worry as well .. haven't gotten my JDM rear yet .. but i've been told that the rear support only protects against small taps (5mph and under). Still, I'm with you, why chance it right? I'm going to eventually get it and customize the beam. It shouldn't be too hard with the right tools. I'm assuming you'd only need to shorten it a bit on the two ends so that the flush face backs up a bit into the car. A shop will definitely be a good way to go on this one.

This REALLY bums me out! I thought it was direct bolt on. I have a little list of thing to do and the JDM bumper was on top....I have 2 kids so I'm not taking a chance modifying or removing the crash beam. God help anyone in the back seat if you get hit by a bigger vehicle.

screw that rear bumper, and the front one for that matter.
as stated above it only protects against 5mph and below accidents.
altho way they are bolted into the frame makes it look like it would pull the ends (taillights rear, headlights front) inward together to help protect the cabin in high speed accidents.

actually i don't even know if my crash beam is bent or broken haven't looked yet. Also other then the crash beam being in the way the bumper is just a bolt on correct?

Only there for up to a 5 mph impact! That's almost the funniest thing I've heard of all day. What, at a 6 mph or more impact does it turn into dust or does it magically break away from the frame and move out of the way?
It's designed not to bend/buckle up to 5 mph not meaning they're useless after 5mph. If anything...get it modified. Don't just get rid of it especially if you ever put kids in your car. And yes, it's supposed to be a direct fit other than the beam.
