Quick question about HP/TQ relationship in Evo/STi

I am an Evo newbie and want that to be known. I will be picking up an 06 Evo MR in the next 2 weeks. I just have a question about the relationship of HP and FT lbs of Torque in the Evo and STi:

I have read numerous threads about ECU flashes and EM on the Evo, and it seems like the Evo is always running with more HP than Torque. I was just wondering why this is? Is it something in the 4G63? According to Import Tuner a stock Mitsubishi Lancer Evo IX MR makes 257.7HP/252.3 to the wheels. That is tremendous for an AWD car rated 286/289 at crank.

My STi has a Cobb Stage 2 flash on it and according to their website, the STi is making 350HP/385Ft Lbs on the crank and 277/316 to the wheels according to a Cobb in house Mustang AWD dyno..

Just wondering why the STi has so much torque compared to HP? Makes me wonder if the whole 300/300.. because the stock STi makes 238/248 to the wheels.. is it possible the car loses 62HP and 52Ft Lbs from crank to wheels?

STI has 2.5 liter motor compared to the 2.0 Evo motor. That's one factor giving the STi more torque.

But with some bolt on parts combined with the mivec, you too can have more torque than horsepower.

Well, it a little more complicated then displacement..There are a lot of relationships that come into play here--bore and stroke, dispalcement , rpms at which power is made..Turbo, number of cylinders, engine design--ie 4cylinder opposed vs.in line.. etc... bottom line is a longer stroke and turbo will give you more Tq... for the STI--the opposed 4 combined with the stroke/turbpo gives more tq..

The EVO block is a smaller than STI block but EVO turbo is bigger than STI.

Small turbo will create more back pressure than big turbo. It means that small turbo because of pressure (and heat produce because of back pressure) will be more efficient at "low" rpm compared to bigger turbo.
As a result, max torque will come sooner on STI than Evo and spool will taper more with the suby.

Since Power = Torque x rpm, STI will make more torque sooner for the same amount of max power.

Find some dyno charts, you'll see that power on STI come at 2/3 of max rpm, Evo makes power near red zone.

Thanks for the explanations. I definitely understand the HP/TQ Relationship a lot better now.

I have been sold on the Evo for a long time now.. Just waiting to get my self back to the states, get a cold beer, and go pick up the MR the day after I'm home...

Airborne!

im modified. i run 325hp/335lb-ft of torque. it all depends on how you have it set up. if you push extra boost in your going to end up with a high hp/low tq car.

that cant be true about boosting more and ending up with higher hp instead of torque cause i got my tune with the three mods i have and ended up with a little over 300hp/340tq. that is just with my boost turned up to spike 23 and taper to 18.

you have to remember that there is also a difference between viii's and ix's... what he describes is far more common is viii's (especially the early ones).
