If mivec is the only major difference in the engine drivetrain i see no reason to get a 9
The 05 VIII and the IX both come with front LSD Limited Slip Differential.
280 Cams idle much smoother in the IX still using the ECU then any VIII I have ever seen.
In fact even RRE said on there site...
"280's are meant heavily modified cars only. They are very lumpy and most cars would not idle unless you run some type of stand alone engine management system."
That is if you are looking for a STREET & STRIP car.

Here are some old thread that I posted to get some INFO for IX mods.
There are a few good and fairly useful responses posted in them.

i personally think the ix's main claim to fame is its larger housing'd 16g turbo.

a cammed evo 8 is the same as a mivec IX minus the turbo.

id get an VIIII and get a big turbo kit, or just a stock turbo upgrade like a green.

So then the 2004 doesn't have LSD in the front?

BTW, thanks for the very useful information, Kc2Buk. Good info!

2003 / 2004 do NOT have Front LSD. But, you can get a Front LSD for both years.

I do want it for a daily driver -- but I also want to play around with it. AutoCross and maybe track it a bit. So I want one that will give me the best of both worlds.

I'm leaning towards the RS. I want something that's fast and fun.

But I'm thinking I can save several thousand by getting an 8 as opposed to a 9 -- then put that money towards making it faster. Cams, Intake, Exhaust, tune, Coilovers - etc.

Probably be faster than a 9 and still be cheaper. I can't decide.

I think I could do the swap myself. How much do those run and is that complex? I find pretty good deals on '03 and '04 and maybe come out ahead by getting one then doing the swap. Or maybe just buy an '05 and that would be one less thing to bother with. Again, undecided.
