At 50k other than the timing belt change pending.....clutches usually are replace around this mileage. Has it been changed? Does the 5th gear grind at high RPM shifts? Was there a '03 TSB that was not yet rectified by the dealership? Are either modified in the slightest way? Definitely do a compression test and make sure they are around 170-180 psi across all 4 cylinders and check the plugs for fouling, sludge etc... for tell tale signs of a bad running engine.
If both cars checkout mechanically, then get the car that is newer with lower miles, the WRX.
But ultimately if you will not be satisfied with the modest power of a WRX and will modify it.... then go with the EVO. You will always spend more trying to make the WRX into an STI.
Make sure what your plans are in the future with it then decide. I bought my EVO with the plan not to touch a thing. BOY was I WRONG!!!
Good luck.

yea , the 03's are fine...i have one as well bought it with 40k, now have 56k...did have to change clutch, thats about it...the grind to fifth was covered under warranty, so def check those things out when you test drive and what have you as the others have pointed out.

Depends on where you go. A clutch job is anywhere from 500 to 2k (if you go to a dealer)
If you are really 16, I would go with a WRX (non sti), they are easier to drive, the power is smoother, and you won't have every ricer out to race you. And you probably won't kill yourself in it
