EVO to STi... my buddy is about to do it!
Alright, well... my friend has a 2003 Apex Silver VIII. It is stock and thus far in a year of ownership he has not driven it much because of the need for a new clutch, new brakes... and one thing after another. He is considering a used STi and getting rid of his EVO. I was wondering if anyone has done this, or come FROM an STi... it would be good to hear exactly why you made the move you made. This car is going to be his only and he is interest in the most durable, managable for daily driving but does not want to sacrafice the performance part. I would like to bring a productive thread on this topic to him to help him out so he doesn't do something he will regret.

You going to need your flame suit....Ill keep my flamethrower locked up for now, Im sure there are plenty chomping at the bit behind me.
Tell your buddy to get here and search the threads, the are hundreds and hundreds of posts on this very topic. And keep in mind, you're on an evo forum. You will most likely get an evo-biased answer. Likewise on a STi forum.

I currently have an 05 STi and although I love it I'm in the mood for something different so I'm probably making the move to a new Evo X soon.
Maintenance wise it's not too bad. I have 66k on mine and the only thing I've had to do other than routine maintenance is replace the front O2 sensor which died at 63k miles on me.
Sounds like he probably won't mod the car much since his 03 Evo is stock, which makes life easier. The STi costs a lot more than the Evo does when it comes to making more power from mods.
The only thing I would tell him to worry about is the 07 STi seems to run VERY lean with the stock tune. Many 07 owners have blown their engines and their cars are stock. The 08 has a similar issue. If it's stock the dealer will warranty it but it is a huge hassle. The other option is to get a Cobb AP or OpenECU Stage 1 tune and not have to worry about the car running so lean ever again, and get some extra power too.
The reason I'm moving away from the STi is I'm not a fan of the new hatch design. Otherwise I would probably have bought another one.

why doesnt he just get those things fixed or upgraded. it is so much easier to work on an evo.
trust me i have worked on and upgraded sti, not the funnest job, and definitely takes longer. key point why do i want to remove my tires to change the spark plugs!!!!!!!!
stcik with an evo if he doesnt want a hard time replacing things

Considering he has an 03 he wont make very much more if any over an 04-05STI in terms of typical STG1 mods. If he has a IX that would be a very different story. He should just keep the evo. Put brakes and a clutch in it and he will be good for 40k+ miles if he takes care of it.

He had the car parked because he couldnt afford to fix the brakes... the same time his clutch was slipping. RIGHT after he bought it, one thing after the other. He has yet to have T-case issues or gear grinds but is anticipating it where he has heard of no real consistant issues with the STi.

So all he needs is new brakes and a clutch?? That's 1500 max for both the brakes & clutch installed with a stock OEM clutch.. and 2k max for a stage 2 exedy..
Instead of getting rid of it how about he just gives it to some that will actually take care of the car.. You said he's ok now with a job, or money, fix the car or buy a beater.. Because it just sounds like if he gets' an STi, he'll just do the same thing and be lazy about it, and let another nice car go to waste.

Honestly, how does your friend expect to get any trade in value on an Evo with bad brakes and a dead clutch? Before even thinking about the attributes of another car, maybe both of you should huddle together and think of the real world economic aspects e.g. is the car even paid off?
