just go in and mention that you can get a brand new X with 0% financing for $25,500 from the dealer. That's what I'm doing in a couple of hours when the dealer opens, well, $27,500 with the package I'm getting. I was there yesterday, just finishing the paperwork today.

Get some price quotes from other places for a similar vehicle for the price you want, if you can get one of course. Actual quotes will really help out your negotiating leverage and you can use them as a fallback incase you don't get exactly what you want.
Go in pre-financed with a check ready to go. Do NOT go into the delaership un-financed.
Do the math for TT+L and go in with the exact figures you want to pay out the door.
Walk in, sit down, tell the salesman that he has 15 minutes to sell you a car, after 15 minutes you are leaving and purchasing another vehicle. Let him/her show you what he/she has and what price he/she can give you. Show him/her the quotes you have and show him/her the price that you want to pay. Then, show them your financing paperwork/check and mention that if you don't get the price you want within your 15 minute timespan that you will leave and spend your money where you got the other quotes.
If they accept - your golden.
If they decline you have a few options:
1. hopefully, the other quotes you got were real and you can fall back to one of those.
2. haggle down to as close to your desired number as possible
3. leave and wait for them to call you. they WILL call and might be able to work with you now

+1 for 2devious...
also, know that southcoast mitsu doesnt really like to move on prices...but if you already have financing set up, youll be in a better position to buy...
i just bought a ix...the original sticker was 30k, i got them down to 25k out the door, because i was prefinanced...

What are the chances of doing any successful haggling - or even just making any headway on haggling - over the phone or sending an offer via email? I found an 03 VIII with 27k miles for $19k, but its 3 hours from me and I don't feel like wasting that much gas if its going to be a waste of time. Edmunds True Market Value for the car is $16900 and I was going to offer $16500 and go up to a max of $17k, but I'd rather be able to get a feeling for if its feasible or not before going out there. Think there's any chance?

it also depends how much they have in the car. with a car like an evo, the book value, what the book says people should pay, and the actual value, what people are really willing to pay are way different.
look at the 1st gen dsm's. book value on them is next to nothing, edmunds says 1400 bucks for a 91 gsx. people will easily pay up to 3500 (some times more for especially clean/stock) for those cars so the book value is pretty much meaningless. but it does give u a good idea.
i paid 19k for my 04 evo with 42000 miles on it. edmunds says retail should have been around 16.5k, but i know for a fact (i work there) the dealer had about 18 grand in it.

I've heard people say this quite a bit. It sucks when the car's 3 hours away though lol. But walking out of a dealership after making an offer definitely seems like its usually effective at least in some way.
