How much millage till I change the oil?
Hello guys,
I know this question seems kind of stupid, but I just bought my evo about a month ago. The previous owner told me I should change the oil at 12k miles because it should be every 3k miles. I said no problem. The thing is he was using mobil 1 with the gold cap which says its good every 15K miles, the car has 12,500 miles right now... Is the previous owner a bit overprotective or should I change it every 3k miles even though it says on the bottle its ok every 15k? Please let me know! Thanks in advance.
Also if it makes any difference, the car has TBE, DP, Intake and tune. Last time at the Dyno it was putting 360whp.

you can personally choose to do what you prefer -- i think it boils down to how much you love your car and want to take care of that exensive motor. i'd personally use royal purple or amsoil; however, mobil1 is okay for your set up. i do oil changes on regular petrol gas every 2500. if you run ethanol (if you're set up for that in the future) i'd consider changing even more frequently.

you will probably get a bunch of different opinions and a lot of it probably has to do with how you treat your car. I don't race mine around (86K still on stock clutch). I do mine between 4000-5000 miles, I start to feel uncomfortable as I approach 5k but I've gone a little longer at one time or another.
3000 always seemed conservative to me and probably a carryover from the old days of conventional oil/engines

Don, I run Amsoil in mine and you can run that oil for 15000+ miles. Being an EVO lover you're going to change it sooner. I do. But with using Amsoil I know I'm putting a good brand of oil in my car and with it breaking down...I don't worry about it at all being that I change my a lot sooner than recommended. Its just that extra piece of mind knowing my engine is being protected, well protected up to the point where I change my oil. Not, my engine is being protected but once I get close to that change point its a gamble on how good that oil is at that point in time.

synthetic is a more durable oil.It should be changed every 5k.that 3 month 3k miles rule is for conventional oils since it has less shelf life then synthetic. In the year ive owned my car i havent driven it over 3k miles yet.i did change oil in the spring because walmart had 5 quart jug of mobil 1for $22 and i got a few mobil 1 filters before autozone discountinued them.

Take an Oil Analysis sample... The best $23.00 insurance policy you can get..
That is THE ONLY way you know not only what condition the oil is in but what may be happening on the inside of your engine.. We call it predictive maintenance

I do mine every 3K or 3 months. Mostly every 3 months since I'm at the 3K range around then. Manual says 3,500 miles. I think that's a little conservative as well. My friend has a new 335i (that or a 328i /w x-drive which is the AWD version). It's a I6 with twin turbo that produces 300hp and only slightly slower than our cars. BMW recommends 7500 miles for that car, if you can believe it. I can see BMW drivers being more "Adult driven" while evos are hit on more often. I take it easy in my car 90% of the time and only really floor it if I need to merge into traffic. I could see extending it in the winter months if you just took it easy.
