Oil cooler importance?
Please help with your personal experiances. Is it safe not too run a oil cooler? If not, can you plug the feed and return line? Or should you loop them? For daily driver? For track use only? High horsepower applications? Please help with your input? Thanks!

I'm trying to figure out about my friends Evo ix just spun a bearring only 500 miles after building the whole engine. He eliminated the oil cooler and plugged each end. After the car broke peolpe told him it's because he should have looped the lines. Just trying to figure out the best reason for spun bearrings. Was it machine work? Clearences ect? Oil pressure was good.

Maybe the motor had issues with bearings before. Lot of debris throughout the engine and oil cooler. So instead of replacing a 500 dollar plus oil cooler, the lines were plugged. Thanks for the input.

I eliminated my oil cooler on my pure autocross race car to save weight and make room for a front side-exit exhaust. I looped one of the oil cooler lines and everything worked fine for autocross. I would never do this on a daily driver or track car.

Well you posted in the newb section so you got newb responses.
"It came with the car"....that's kind of funny....not exactly the best insite to why you should run something on the car.
You will get plenty of mixed reviews if you search. There are plenty of high horsepower cars running around with the cooler's removed for the exact reason your buddy has....$600 is a lot for something that can be eleminated.
If I was road racing the car...yeah I would put it back on asap..but for the average driver I think the general consensus is you can go either way.

The turbo spins at 100,000+rpms which causes serious heat. I would always run a oil cooler just to help keep oil break down to a minimum. Are there people running without oil coolers on there car...yes. The question you have to ask yourself is do you want to take the chance of the oil getting too hot one day and get too thin and spin a bearing and destroy the motor. I would use an oil cooler just for extra piece of mind. Now does it totally prevent oil break down...no, but it can only help. Just remember to replace if you have destroyed the motor in anyway shape or form.
