06 Evo IX or 04 VW R32
Hello all!
Name is Jorge.
I did some searching but couldn't find the exact info I was looking for. I'm trying to figure out which would be more cost effective to reach around 400whp.
I currently own a 2004 VW R32, 3.2L V6,6-Speed, AWD, rated at 240hp. I paid 19,500 for the R. And found to reach 400whp in the R it will cost me roughly $6500. This is with buying a turbo kit. So that roughly amounts to 26000 bones.
I was looking through the classified and found the I can get a decent EVO IX for around 20-24k(I would also consider a earlier model to accommodate price efficiency) Now how much money roughly would I have to put into the Evo to attain around 400whp?
Both cars are amazing cars, and I've been driving VWs for a long time but I think I need a change of pace, but I need to find out if its cost efficient to switch to a different platform or keep what I got and turbo it.
Thanks in advance for the input!

IX by a landslide. It will take you about $1800 maximum to reach 400whp on a stock turbo IX using E85 or race gas. Or just buy one out of the FS forums that is already tastefully modded.
The R32 is more comfortable, but its not a real performance car, and the mods required for reliable 400whp will make it counterproductive.
If you want to go fast, dump it.

If you don't have E85 available to you then a stock frame turbo from CBRD (BBK FUll or the XL/B, FP Green, Red or Black). They range in price from 1200-2000. Another 500 in fuel upgrades max (fuel pump and injectors) and you going to have the potential for more then 400's.
Evo by a landslide. And not because i own one or this is an Evo site. LOL

Awesome guys thanks for the input. I was kinda expecting the Evo to be the winner in this situation. Considering the Evo is already turbo and has close to 46hp more than the R32.
I believe it is time to put the R32 up for sale and start looking for a Evo IX.
Once again thank you for the input, and hope to become a contributing member of these forums.
Take care!

06 evo IX . all you need is turboback exhaust rougly 800 bucks, hallman manual boost controller 100 bucks, walbro fuel pump -100 bucks, hks 272 cams- 600 bucks, and ecu flash -roughly 350-500 bucks, buschur racing intake-80 bucks, and you're set at just about 400hp, i had that set up on my evo 8 so..yup [=

Just finished looking for cars and picked up my EVO IX today. I'm so glad I did. If your looking for a car with potential an 06 IX is probably the best choice out there. I actually found the car on these forums. Good luck with your quest. I was almost about to get an M3 but decided to stay having fun.

Seems strange to me that you would come to an evo forum asking for an unbiased opinion regarding the evo...
Anyway, the evo is built from the ground up as a performance machine, where as the R32 is a Golf with performance parts slapped onto it. I don't buy the evo is a lancer argument.

we have a client that traded his supercharged R32 for an evo ix,
his supercharged R32 made 260/220 on our dyno, for 2200 dollars, his evo ix made 320/320... and now has a 50 trim turbo on it making 418/345... he said he LOVES the evo..
the R32 is nice, great build quality, but its not a true AWD car... and to me just lacks power!!

I would honestly say it all depends on your needs, if you just want a daily driver with comfy seats and a decent AWD then the R32 is good to go. But if you want the best bang for your buck then the Evo is the best way to go. I will still always like MK4 R32s more (I have owned 4 MK4's already) but the Evo fits my needs way more. I want something that will be fun to drive and has more potential. Plus I seem to manage my way through a transmission in every VW I have owned (all 7 of them with the exception of my wifes Passat) so I am hoping that at least an Evo will stand up to my needs and I won't demolish transmissions left and right.
I would say I am pretty biased towards R32's but I still say the Evo is a better choice.

I was probly going to buy the Evo even if the VW was cheaper. I had a first gen Eclipse GSX before and that car was a blast, wanna get back into a Mitsubishi.
