Is there such a thing as an EVO MR SE??
#46
there is no need to hate on the mr. just because it doesnt have a 5 speed doesnt make it a wack car, a 5 speed is only 1g used with 15k miles easily from sellers. big deal. but is it needed to swap right away? nope. im running fine and i dont feel like i got a "****ty " evo because i didnt get an se. what does the se have that the mr doesnt besides the 5 speed? and if so the stock 5 speed isnt the best 5 speed available aftermarket so blah, people take it to shep or tre anyway, and clutch gets swapped so blah. WHen i got the mr i was happy to get low miles and low price at 21 k. with 20k miles. I'll probably get a shep or tre 5 speed just because the abusability but not yet. anyway, FJF is correct. The SE was a car on its own and the MR was also a car on its own. NOT MR SE. the mr already had the options of the SE minus the 5 speed

My apologies, I listed the SE as an appearance package which was incorrect:

Mitsubishi has introduced the 2006 Lancer Evolution "Special Edition" (MR model shown above) as the final iteration of the Evo IX before the long awaited Evo X replaces it. The Evolution SE will ride the line out in style with red-stitched Recaro seats inside the cabin and a host of exterior enhancements. The Evolution SE gets a new airdam extension up front that reduces front end lift and the same lightweight aluminum roof worn by the Evolution RS and MR. It rolls on 17-inch forged BBS wheels with a diamond black finish and illuminates the road ahead with a set of HID headlights. The price of the Evolution SE will start at $33,249, which places it neatly above the standard Evo IX and below the range-topping MR.
Press Release:
Thrilling Visual and Performance Enhancements at an Excellent Value Distinguish 2006 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution SE
July 31, 2006 -- CYPRESS, Calif. --
Mitsubishi Motors North America (MMNA) is applying the "Special Edition"; treatment to its critically acclaimed ninth-generation Lancer Evolution. The 2006 Lancer Evolution SE offers special features at a competitive price of $33,249 MSRP to make this legendary performance vehicle even more thrilling. The new SE trim level represents the final enhancement to a Lancer Evolution body style that has been on sale in the U.S. market since 2003.
Inside the Special Edition trim level, supportive, red-stitched RECARO(R) seats accentuate the interior while the exterior receives a new front airdam extension that adds style while reducing front end lift. A lightweight aluminum roof panel, also found on the Lancer Evolution RS and MR, helps control body roll by lowering the vehicle's center of gravity. The feather weight 17"; forged BBS(R) alloy wheels, now in a new "Diamond Black"; finish, add style while reducing unsprung weight to improve suspension performance. The SE trim level also includes high-intensity discharge (HID) headlights with halogen fog lamps giving the vehicle a distinctive look. The available exterior color choices for the Lancer Evolution SE are Apex Silver, Graphite Gray and Tarmac Black.
True to the Lancer Evolution's heritage, the SE is powered by a 2.0-liter inline four-cylinder DOHC intercooled-turbocharged engine with Mitsubishi Innovative Valve timing and Electronic Control (MIVEC) that is mated to a rugged 5-speed transmission.
The revised airdam, Recaro(R) seats with red stitching, and forged BBS(R) wheels with "Diamond Black"; finish are available on the MR trim level as well in the form of an Appearance Package which sells for $500.00.

If it's an MR, it has the 6-speed. Period.
If it's not an MR, it has the 5-speed. Period.
What we call the "MR SE" is an MR with the appearance package. A true "SE" is NOT an MR, and has the 5-speed. (but does have most of the MR goodies)
I have the brochure for the IX SE, and it's available on eBay.

The forums started calling the MR w/ Appearance Package an "MR SE".

at the end of the day if you pay extra money for the magical MR SE your stupid. there are folks all the time selling there SE interior. one could just pick up a MR buy the interior for cheap and there you GO. A evo is a evo the only thing you should wonder about is 6speed or 5speed. the Rest is the same BS.

Of course, that's all up to the buyer. You're right, most Evo buyers don't care, and happily muck up^H^H^H^H^Hmodify their cars away from factory specifications.
Different strokes for different folks. I'm just one of the small minority who will pay a premium for a non-molested Evo.

Well, I just kind of ended up with mine. I really didn't want to pay the extra markup for the package, but in Sept. '06 there were no GG MRs in the Southeast.
They found a MR w/ AP at a sister dealer and offered it to me for $400 over what I had negotiated originally for the standard MR. I really hate the gray BBS on the Gray car, so I figured I'd just take it and keep the wheels. It worked out.
Plus, the seats are baller.

I was vacillating between another RS and the SE. An aluminum roof was a no-compromise feature. I decided on the SE due to its HIDs; my eyes aren't what they used to be. The color choices, though, were a drawback. I wanted another red Evo, maybe blue. SE's Black, silver, and GG weren't it. I considered a MR - aluminum roof and I could have red - but couldn't bring myself to buy a car with a piece of plastic taped to its roof. Too, having to stare at the dumb badge on the console would forever remind me that Mitsu thought I was too dumb to recall which car I bought. Having the 6-speed didn't exactly thrill me, either. So, I went for a GG SE. Figured, the color looks purple-ish in the right light, I get my aluminum roof and HIDs, though there are still times when I wish for another RS.

The problem doesn't lie with the car being modified, as an entity. If folks only uncorked the motors, had the parts professionally installed and the car tuned, made subtle suspension mods, there wouldn't be an issue. But, that's not what happens. Add the typically clueless owner to the equation, who just can't fathom why his car is rattling, when it's sitting on a suspension and motor mounts harder than granite, and has an open dump whose low-frequency emissions are literally tearing the car apart, and we don't exactly have a recipe for success. Then there's the maintenance that the owner cannot afford, because he's working at Best Buy and living in his mom's basement, spending every cent on car payments and insurance. But, he can sure find a way to bolt on some useless contraption to add to his mod list, whether its takes away from the drivability/integrity of the machine or not. Great, huh?
