The title of this post should have been, "How far did you go on the original timing belt before your engine turned into aluminum putty"

The reason Mitsusbishi recommends a 60,000 mile change interval is because they are trying to see that the above does not happen to you.

I m at 73,000 miles original belt, replacing it at 80k mark. Note: the dealer says 60k but any GOOD IMPORT shop will tell you 70k. Why you may ask, simple, they dont call it a stealership for nothing.

It is actually 60K OR 60MONTHS! Time is just as hard on rubber as use. I would worry more about the age than the miles. I saw a 12yr old 3KGT VR4 with 30K miles that the belt snapped on and caused a LOT of damage. The t-belt is not worth gambling with. I am so wary of t-belts that I got a Kevlar and still plan on replacing it every 60K miles.

anything more than factory recommendations, especially if your car is modded, is sketchy lol. i bought my car with 63k on it and wasnt sure if the previous owner did the 60k on it so i did it at 65k anyways.

I did mine at 94k, took it apart and found the water pump starting to leak.

idk about you but I dont want coolant leaking anywhere near my timing belt.

also the bearings in your idler pulleys, tensioner etc... all wear out over time and could cause failure

I dont see that being a problem with your prancer. Better safe than sorry tho. The "good import shop" probably says that to give the belt extra time to possibly break, causing you to go there to spend more money on a build

Funny this thread popped up today. I was at my boys shop and he was changing a timing belt on an 04 with 73k and the belt started to come apart at the ribs. Change your belts asap

Changed mine on my 2003 evo 8 with about 108,000 miles this past spring. Timing belt was on it's last leg.

one thing i made sure i checked on my evo b4 i bought it was to see if timing belt was changed. I went and carfax it and sure enough it was there changed at 66,000
