The Yahoo artical is funny--nothing like getting opinions of the environmental groups to address the issue--- not an engineer or car enthusiast in the bunch-- but with that said, I dont like to drive a car past mid RPM's until I see the oil temp gauge start to register--around 100*f and that can take more then a few minutes idling or driving. If nothing else I dont like to even attempt to get on it if the water temp gauge isn't at operating temp. Cold thick oil on bearings can't be good and then thowing the same at a turbo and going from 32* to 800* in an instant--. Let it warm up!

No to mention you are on E85 and when you hold the pedal down trying to get the ***** to start you accidentally swap maps because you have v7 dual map switching and now you are over 9k with a pump gas map

Car should warm up really quickly with 23count of knock.

i let mine warm up till almost normal operating temps with my built motor. If you get carbon build up just floor it when it is warm n it will come right out

let it warm up until the temp gauge starts to move then you can drive off. you should never boost a car until its fully warmed up though.

I do the same. The manual also tells you to warm up until the gauge starts to move so I go by that.

i vote on "30 sec and take it easy first few minutes"..
and i doubt there is any harm if the car is idling for more then 5 minutes..

I personally warm my car up for at least a minute (no more than 10 minutes, if I need to scrape frost/ice off the windows) before driving it. Since our cars are turbocharged, getting a bit of oil flow through the turbo is a good idea before taking off. I take the car easy until it's fully warmed up, then mash the gas pedal from stop light to stop light until I hit my destination and then let the car idle for a minute before turning the ignition off (2-5 minutes if I've been driving hard).

And when he says never boost a car until it is warmed up, he meant to say never boost a car until the oil is fully warmed up to running temp. Just because your coolant gauge says it's warm doesn't mean your oil is... Especially for guys like me runnng the AMS oil pan with 1.5quarts more than std oil pan and larger oil coolers. Actually it is one quart but I run a 1/2 quart high

ya, honestly i let mine idle until the coolant line is in the middle and then i drive with the car for 2-3 minutes until i start beating the **** out of it.

when i was stock block, i just left when the needle started to move then beat it when it reached full coolant temp tho.

built motor wont even seal right until its warmed up.

That is exactly what I use to do on my stock block and what I do now on my built motor. If people take care of their motors they will last.

How many guys switch to a thinner oil in the winter, and does that affect oil temps, faster warmup etc?
