nearly stock evo 8 boosting 28psi? wtf?

okay....so i bought an evo 8 a few months ago not knowing much about evo's and not know where this evo came from, who had it, and what work was done to it. i did notice the turbo looks pretty damn new compared to other stuff under the hood. i like making irrational decisions that bite me in the @$$ later i had the boost hitting at about 23psi and spiking to 25psi when i started driving it-but i was pretty easy on it since it was suggested to me. i had a buddy of mine who used to be a mechanic check it out and install an MBC. we had the bastard cranked up and hitting 28psi but turned it down to 20psi after zipping around for a few minutes. he couldnt believe we were hitting 28 was left scratching his head. i know that i should keep the boost down until further work is done to handle more psi and to and prevent damage. i dont have the money yet for a dyno tune but will have it done by the end of the month. the only thing i did to my evo other than the MBC and an intake. so my question is, how in the world can i be hitting 28psi on what we think is stock? btw, we didnt get into the engine or closely examine the turbo. i like to hear different theories or at least how stupid/noobish i am.

Even if you can't afford a tune. See if you can get a cable, with EVO Scan. That way you can do some logging on here, and members can take a look at things and possibly help you out. Once i get back to my EVO, this is how im gonna learn as much as a i can about it. There are plenty of people to help you out here in the forums, but if you can provide alot more information on what type of tune you have going on now, by getting some logs they can even help with just that.

Hope this helps

Steve

dude- Just park her till you save money and get a real tune. or as hard as it seems lay off the boost. you have a good chance of blowing up your engine by doing what your doing.
28psi untuned is asking for it.

The 14b turbo (tiny) that came on my DSM would hit 28 psi if left uncontrolled.

ok so I didn't really get an answer. I already know the safe solution here. I just wanted to know how I was hitting 28psi. Maybe I have a non stock turbo, injectors, fuel pump, flash. perhaps my mechanic buddy doesn't know as much as I think he does...I really don't know.

I think you were given your answer you just missed it. Theoratically a turbo of any size and run any amount of boost, but once you hit a certain limit your out of the turbos efficency range and your just blowing hot air into the engine and then things go boom which is what your on your way to doing now. My buddy was running 32psi on the stock VIII turbo on larger injectors and meth and all bolt ons and making 380whp and 410 tq. So if your asking can you run 28psi on the stock turbo yes. It'll handle it, but not without proper tuning.

Your "mechanic-buddy" cranked the hell out of the boost controller that's why it spiked to 28 psi. Don't ever let people like that touch your car without knowing what's been done. Gl.

Got cha. The short lived cranking the MBC to 28psi lasted about 10 minutes until we cranked it back down to 20psi. Its been there ever since. I will be taking to CBRD soon to get checked out. Thanks for the input guys.

Did you base you boost settings off of a boost guage? If so you probably hit more than 28psi and are probably running more than 20psi at the moment (unless you have a freakishly accurate boost guage).

Just take it to CBRD. And don't let anyone mess with it after that, turning up boost without monitoring AFR will certainly blow stuff up.
