Are there narrower rims available for the EVO for snow tires?

.[/QUOTE]

Yes... that and snow tires will give you better traction in the snow.
The stock tire/wheel setup works best on dry pavement, not really on snow.
The tire rack might be able to provide some advice on a good wheel/tire combo (but definitely get narower rims)

I have a suggestion, obviously the Evo isn't right for you, it's not right for A LOT of people, as long as those people realize that it's still an awesome car, props to them....
Anyway, what they say is right, with a bit of money into mods on the Evo, it turns into a whole new car (one that's better and definitly doesn't die at 5k) and can pull more than 1g with just some good track tires...every car is good, so don't think I'm trashing 914s, or anything else...just let me finish
Mainly here though, my suggestion is to sell the Evo as fast as possible for the best price you can get, and screw an S4 or an A4, those cars are way too expensive
My friend and I have been looking for semi-luxury/semi-sporty cars for her for the past month now, Audis and BMWs arent worth it unless you really want to dish out the extra cash...thus far the Volvo S40 T5 and S60R are great, as is the Subaru Legacy 2.5 GT, and the Acura TL and TSX are pretty good too...none of these are HIGH performance, but they're a mix between luxury and performance for a lot cheaper than an Audi...and they're pretty darn quick for their own, my suggestion is: race your 914 and buy a luxury/sport hybrid like those ^, they sound more like your car

If you keep the Evo, the 235s work just fine in the snow here in Utah, could get worse there, probably does, but I use my stock rims with Blizzack LM-22s and they work wonderfully in the dry and snow...the only thing that needs help is the Brembos are a bit crappy when they're cold...high performance braking comes at a slight cost....but I say sell the Evo still

Edit: And don't listen to all the people whining and complaining on here, people make mistakes all the time, and WAY too many Evo owners are WAY too defensive about their cars (lot's of us tend to think they're a lot better than they are)...like if I said...an S2000 can take an Evo, everyone would freak...thing is, your 914 if it's as highly modified as it sounds, could probalby take a stock Evo, so people need to stop whining and start worrying about making their cars fast enough to keep up with all the others...that said, I still love my Evo WAY more than any other car on the road

you know what... i've been doing tons of research before i step into buying the Evo. Even that, i felt somewhat dissapointed / regret after i drove it for the first time out of the dealer's office (stupid dealer wont let me test drive it first). It was due to the shaking and unused to the extra feel to the crappy road. BUT all those feeling go pass away and I never looked back because we all know how it performs on smooth roads and corners.. and tell u the truth I actually feel uncomfortable driving back my old Ford now.. so, give it some time, you'll love it

Are all Evos the same?
If anything is the same about Evos, it seems they are all different.
It's got more rattles than my 200TQ with 200k miles on it and nowhere near the creature comforts.
Yep that about sums it up. If I was a little older I would curse myself every day for driving this rattle box. Daily driving isn't really what it's all about.
There is a "oh boy" torque surge between 3,500 and 5,000 rpm if you are in the right gear and right speed, but it seems to fall flat at 5,000 rpm on.
Yep, that about sums it up as well. I fixed it with a $300 electronic boost controller set to ~21psi to redline. Definitly a worthwhile investment. Plus I can set it to 0% duty cycle as a sort of traction control in foul weather.
Given what brakes are installed (real) on the car, I'm expecting to outbrake all of my curent cars.... It does'nt
The stock pads aren't that great, and I think they tried to engineer too many compromises into them. I run Motul RBF600 fluid and Ferodo DS2500 pads. Night and day difference for not much coin. If you switch to aftermarket pads, please remember to scavenge not only the metal pad shims, but also the shims glued to the back of the stock pads. Use a razor blade to carefully get them started, and a sharp putty knife to get them the rest of the way off. Also use plenty of Permatex anti-seize (not the red CRC burn-off-as-soon-as-you-track-it gunk).
It snowed 1" yesterday and the Evo scares me. Just touch the brakes and the ABS is chattering but still stops slower than my 200TQ with bald tires. Hop on the throttle and the Evo's *** end tries to pass itself. The book recommeds snow tires, but is that patching a flaw? My 200TQ is way better with bald tires and it has 235hp along with bun warmers.
The Evo is the only car I've ever seen that has warnings about the tires on the driver's side door (unless your dealer took the sticker off). The compound is so soft that the tires turn into rocks when it's cold. Even cheap *** all-season tires like Kumho Ecsta ASX in the stock size would be vastly better in the snow than the stock advans. Think of it as driving on the snow with R compound tires, which is basically what the Advans are.
The ABS in the Evo is so sensitive it lets just about NO snow pile up in front of the tires. In other words, it works so poorly because the system is too good. Great on dry/wet but not good for anything else. Pull your ABS fuse in gravel, snow, and ice and you will stop a lot better.
Maybe I should have gotten a S4?
If you are asking that question, then 'Yes' is probably the answer. This car has a very narrow section of the market for good reason. It's not for most people.
Anyone want an EVO8 with 2,000 miles?
I wish I still only had that many miles!
Sorry about the ranting and raving, but it would be cheaper to spend the cost of the snow tires on the Evo and drive the Audi for the winter. Which is not what I wanted to do.
Again, even cheap all-seasons would be better than the near R compound gumballs. The Evo is great for all-seasons you just have to know how to tweak it a little. I feel you because I was disappointed with my Evo when I first got it, but with some TLC it can change into a completely different animal (although it will never be a rattle-free luxo-cruiser of course). Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

giving an evo an evaluation based on driving the stock (summer) tires on snow is like evaluating the taste of soup using a fork. you figure a guy who owns so many porshes and other exotics would know better.

Evo 8

I bought a 05 Evo MR and live in Wyoming. I was concerned to even drive it home from the dealer with those street tires, as there was snow on the roads. It would've never occurred me to try and make it through the winter with those tires. They even have a freezing temp. Living in Michigan I would think this would be obvious. If you test drove the car for 5 miles you should get a pretty good idea, under normal conditions, how this car performs. If I were you I would park it and sell ASAP before you get too many miles on it. Maybe get a Subaru Outback that comes with heated seats and all-terrain tires.
