Lock the steering wheel(key removed)

Jack up the car, wheels off the ground. Move tire left and right by hand.

Its easier if you have someone shake the tire in and out while you inspect for movement at the inner and outer tie-rod.

I've done what you said . When shaking the wheel, we hear a clunk ( toc ? ) coming from the rack and pinion area . The man who usually take care of my car said it may be the whole rack and pinion .

At this point, I don't think , and i don't want to beleive it is really the rack and pinion.

My evo 9 only have 61k and I drive it normally, no track it is my DD.

I was always told that if there's movement when you shake the tire left/right the tie rods are bad. With balljoints you do the same up/down
