Is there any difference in handling between the 2 cars? how much better are the bbs wheels on the 9 MR? Is the MIVEC really worth it at 400+whp?
You want an 8, 03-04. 2005 they went to ACD/ACD transfer case. If you plan on making 450-500 and higher hp I'd definitely stick to this advice. People are constantly having problems with their ACD when they drag race. Launching kills them and yes they're pricey.

Like someone else said, you definitely don't want an MR unless it's been changed to a 5spd, the 6spds are quite a bit weaker.

You also have to keep in mind the dramatic differences between the two cars. An Evo 8 full bolt ons on E85 pushing 450hp/400tq is going to run circles around and past the zo6. You don't need a 500hp Evo to beat a 500hp Corvette.

I'm putting down 380hp/380tq and I'm a car length behind on the 8th against my buddys fully build Nova with a punched out 454, some fancy torque converter, 4:11 rear end, drag donuts and nitrous. Once I put my GSC cams, Kiggly springs, 1100 High z injectors, fuel rail, O2 dump, 4" speed density intake, Omni 4 bar map sensor and Ethanol tune I definitely won't see him once the tree turns green. He's making around 650hp and I'll be around 400tq, 450hp. Our factory 2 step launch control is for the win.

Evo 9 SE owner here. Currently also own a 06 C6Z. I DD a Tacoma. The Evo is not the best DD but my wife does DD a Evo 8 so it depends on what your ok with. And just a heads up you keep saying you want a cheap DD well I don't call clean Evo 9's cheap any more. Your looking at mid to low 20K's for one now.

Good luck...

great advice guys u guys are making me lean more towards the 8. especially being how much cheaper they are but what is disheartening me is the unavailability of these cars locally or in good condition with few owners.

As far as handling wise how much of a difference does the brembo breaks/ACD differential make?

if you have a friend that owns one, please ask him if you can drive the car around for an hour or so. I know plenty of people that love the car as DD and know a lot more that HATE it. I was one of them, I loved the car for what it was, but as a DD it got really annoying for various reasons, most importantly the harsh ride. So far the X has been the only evo that has impressed me as in DD characteristics...Plus you never menitoned how far of a DD you need it for? If you going to put ~50-60 miles a day i say an 8 or 9 should be no problem as a DD...good luck

I loved my first evo for a DD. It had a full exhaust, intake and an E85 tune making about 350 whp on the stock cams and clutch. I had no problem daily driving this.

My current evo makes just over 500 whp, it has big cams and a tripple plate clutch to hold up to the abuse. I would drive my 2001 saturn winter beater to work over the evo most days just because i didn't want to deal with it in the morning.

Stock cams and a less aggressive clutch is what make a good dd IMO

I have a pretty good tolerance for a bit of a harsh drive it shouldn't bother me too much .

The most disheartening part if how hard it is to find a nice Evo and the nice ones are very expensive not to mention the very high insurance. How did you guys find your evo? How long did it take? Were you guys able to find it locally or did u have to go out of state?

I agree with you about the cost. That always bothered me when I was used to finding good deals on used nice cars.... The Evo, not so much, no real deal to be had even for older cars.

I bought my 97 Cobra for $13,500 with 30,000 miles. I expected to find the same with an Evo but even in 2010 they were all above $18K for the most part even with 80,000 miles!

After driving one though, I know why they are so expensive. It's a real race car in disguise.... More serious out of the box than even my Mustang Cobra.... felt modified in factory form.

Drive one and you'll be sold...... I loved my 9 and I love my X even more. X has more of a street presence but the 9 was a bit faster stock. The X with a flash is however on par with my Turboback exhaust flashed 9.

So I say get an X and you'll be happier with a new car..... If not I'd say just get an IX 5spd.

Great advice guys hopefully I can find one locally in my budget range and an MR is definitely out of the question now. But I'm less inclined to buy out of town especially since I don't have too much knowledge regarding these cars and I know some of the cars are going to be ragged out so I just have to bite my time and just keep looking for the right car.

^^I agree. I own a 9 MR with FP Red, Cams and all bolt on's converted to speed density. I am putting down 480hp and 390tq and I DD mine. I love it, my only downside to DDing mine is its tuned to e85. Which is harder to get. As for DDing the car is AWESOME! Now sometimes when its cold and the evo is cold its tempermental. So I know the 06 MR is the most expensive depending on miles but I coudnt imagine DDing an 8 or a 10. The 5 speed's in the 8,9 and 10 are notchy IMO. I've driven 8's, 9's and the 10's. And my 9 MR drives the best. I had my car through 325hp to 480hp and the 6 speed is the smoothest for a DD. If I was to go and build a track car I totally buy an 03 VII. All my 2 cents worth.
