Brother Buying Car: 03 EVO or 03 WRX

Hello Everyone!

My brother is looking to sell his SR20 S14* 240sx finally and purchase a new car: either a 2003 Evo 8 with 102k Miles (only mini battery and Perrin Intake) or a mostly stock 2003 Sub WRX with 90k miles and no mods. The WRX is $9,750 and the Evo is $13,000. I told him there is nothing like an Evo and 13k is a good deal but he wants to know more and I just recently bought my 05 WW RS so i'm fairly new to the owners scene. Any reasons why he should buy one car vs the other would be awesome! I just wish he knew someone who had an Evo close by so he could test drive it.

I wouldn't own an 03 WRX just because it looks like a 95 Neon from the front

Seriously, there really isn't a single feature of the WRX that I prefer over the Evo. It's mostly personal preference though really.

I am a technician at a Subaru dealer. I drive an Evo.

2003 WRX will have engine problems once you start modding it. Probably transmission issues as well. Plus they're ugly.

He is selling his 240 for like 8k so the cost will be 2k for an WRX or 5k for an EVO. I told him the extra 3K will be well worth it but hes worried about reliability. I told him 90k miles and 102k miles is no real difference. I know the WRX is less HP and not on par with the EVO but he can't afford an STI so hes debating between the 2.

^The difference in miles is not the worry. It's the maintenance of the previous owners.

Also, why are you doing the research instead of the potential owner? Why would a potential owner not do his own research to decide what he wants to get into?

IMO, 2cents, etc - Get him to do his own research, extensively and not look at either car. Your not likely to get a good evo for 13k. It's going to annoy him that he didn't spend X amount more to get into a better condition evo.

The cars will both do the same thing. The maintenance history should be the deciding factor.

I am trying to get him to sign up on the EvoM forums but hes at work right now. hes going to look at the Evo tomorrow but he did a carfax on it and 2 owners and has passed emissions every time but nothing else inside the report. The guy he is buying it off of seems to be answering all his questions truthfully. I'm trying to lean him towards spending some more money but hes being greedy and wants to not spend much. You get what you pay for but I just don't see buying a WRX when I could have an EVO for 5k more. He also only has a few months to pick one up before he gets stationed overseas.

+1 on the evo side. I personally like the look of both cars but the Subaru maintenance cost is a huge deciding factor. I wouldn't mind either car. Both are great.

Other than 4 doors, two completely different cars. I own both but rarely drive the WRX. My wife rarely takes the Evo. So, WRX = girls car.

also let him take into account that evos even though are a little more expensive, have been holding their value even when you tach on more miles. WRX's hold their value but they do not hold as well as evos and stis do.

Looking at both cars and their prices i would say its really up to him, both are nice cars, just the evo is a lil nicer and lil more expensive.
