Evo Test drive today! pg 3

Hey guys, Im a big car guy and currently trying to figure out what new car to buy. So that means im doing my research. Obviously you guys will favor the Evo but im also looking at a 2010/2011 G37 anniversary (red leather)/ IPL, 2013 Hyundai Genesis 3.8 track, and either the Evo X MR or GSR 2008+.

I could list out all the pros and cons for these cars, but it would be a long list. The key factors however that may sway my decision are

G37 interior is nicest of the 3
Evo AWD
Hyundai brand new car, 350HP

All three of these are are relatively equal when you are looking at speed, so then it comes down to other amenities.

I have had my 99 Grand Prix GTX since high school, i have put a lot of time and money in to her. I have had the car for almost 10 years and i think it is about time to store her and get a new car. The question is, what do i get?

pix of the GTX

One of the more popular vids...
This is my other hobby

Price range: Id like to stay under $25k with less than 60k miles if possible

This seems to keep catching my eye....

As much as id like to im not going to be taking my car to the track hardly. This is basically going to be a dd and the occasional drag strip. I have another expensive hobby that i spend most my money on so i wont be able to put too much extra cash in mods. At least at this current time.

Im trying to look at the classified but most images dont load up and i cant post...Anyone know what the requirements are?

I play in multiple golf tournaments throughout the year, anyone that is a familiar with the sport, it can cost a lot of money, especially at my level of play. That being said im not looking to do too many extraordinary mods, at least for the time being.

also not quite sure what the requirements that are needed for me to view and post in the classified threads...but that would be nice to do lol

Other notable cars im looking at are
335i (concerned with maintenance costs)
SRT8 Jeep (concerned with gas)
STI (hate how they sound lol)
G8 GT (Currently own a pontiac and would like to diversify. Solid car though)

Nice to see another new member looking at getting into an evo. I'm looking to buy an evo 8/9 this year. My good friend just sold his G37. He loved it and is kicking himself for selling(only sold it due to the clutch going out and he didnt want to replace it) He autocrossed it and it felt like it had plenty of power. I'm partial to the evo though, they only thing that may sway me from getting an 8 or 9 this year is the release of the 2015 STI, although from a price standpoint I would rather get something cheaper that has a built engine. Good luck with the research!

After reading this thread also wanted to say I have owned 2 STI's (2004 and 2005) They are a lot of fun. On the 2004 I put an equal length header on which took away that boxer rumble and made it sound more like an evo. Also one of my other buddies has a g8 gt that he has done a full exhaust and other mods too and he isnt too happy with it. He says he spent too much on something that is too heavy and not as fun to drive but it looks very nice. (his words).

Truth. Iv driven some amazing Gt's but they are whales, just like mine. They do sound amazing with the right exhaust. The only thing that tops it for me on this list is the Jeep.

Iv been looking for a car for quite a while and i cant help but question what the deal is with salvaged title cars...case in point

http://www.carsforsale.com/used_cars...n_221624879_55

I even came across a 2011 IPL for less than 26k and it had a salvage title bc someone broke into it, took the seats, and took the wheels. All had been replaced with original parts. That car would typically be around $30+

Your price is going to be the limiting thing on an Evo. It's not that they don't exist, but they're fairly uncommon in the price point. You may have to travel.

You're talking about 3 different cars for 3 different reasons.

A luxury sedan with some *****, is not the same as a race car, is not the same as a new wanna be racecar with a warranty.

The Evo handles better (all around) than any new car short of a GT-R or a Porsche. I say all around because there are cars with better slalom times and skid pad ratings on dry track only. But it's no where near as nice inside as a G37. Especially at $25, as you're probably going to be looking at a base interior with out leather.

Finding the car isnt going to be the issue, iv have found plenty in the price range. If need to stretch my $$ to get what i want, I will find a way. The problem is finding what would be best for my situation. If i was an avid racer id get the evo but I just want something fun i can take to the track or drag strip, once in a while. The last time I was at the track was prolly 2 years ago.

For the evo the issue is going to be MR or GSR. My buddies all say GSR bc its a manual. Iv only had the GTX and its an automatic. The MR seems to have better interior options (from what iv seen). I know a lot of you have both, i just want to get the most out of it.

I really wish i could buy one today, considering we are about to get destroyed by 8-10 inches of snow and subzero temps. The G and 3.8 would not be able to handle that like the evo can

I was wondering about the badging of the evos...some that i have come across actually say Evo X or IX etc on the car, other do not. I realize its just a badge and it can be added or removed. This may be a simple question, but are there just Evo MR's and GSR's or are there added features that make them the "Evo X". I feel like i am under the impressing the Evo X is just the newest body style, there are not necessarily added options to make it a X

I'm not sure about the different badging. I've only seen the standard badges for the 2 trims and maybe the variations are aftermarket.

Evo X is the generation of the car. It's not just a body style but a different turbo/drivetrain/s-awc/etc. I got the GSR cause I wanted to buy a new Evo and the $6,000 to $9,000 extra for an MR just didn't seem worth it to me. I also don't really care about luxury options and I do like the 5-speed manual.

At the target price you are indicating, seems like it would be hard to get a good condition MR, unless the used car market is different in your area.

FWIW, I had a buddy who had a 3.8 Spec R and it was such a soulless car. Has no character, transmission issues and very boring. Not very attractive IMHO. I can't comment on the G since I've never driven one.

I have driven the 3.8, i thought it was pretty fun, iv seen some of these cars that are absolutely gorgeous...u could prolly just google "Genesis Couple stance" and ull see some of them.

As far as the G, its super smooth ride with a good amount of power

I couldnt imagine driving these two cars right now though. We got 4 inches of snow and my GTX was struggling, and its FWD. 8-10inches coming tonight

I'm not to sure what interior options are available on the MR, that are not available on the GSR. I have a GSR with SS and SL options. I believe the interior is the same as the MR.

Overall the Evo interior can sometimes leave people wanting a little more. But an Evo with the SS and SL packages, does look pretty nice IMO. Even looks better if you get the GPS (IMO).
