Thinking hard about an EVO
Hey guys brand new to your forum. Make a long story short I am currently giving seroius consideration to buying a used or new EVO and have a few questions for you. Currently if anyone knows much about VW's I have 01 GTI 1.8T with a bunch of aftermarket goodies such as APR Stage III, Quaife clutch/flywheel etc, bilstein coilovers, exhaust and a bunch more. I don't think i will be trading in the GTI but I just have a few worries about the EVO. I have driven both the EVO and STI hard and I must say I like the sti tranny and power better, but definitely like the looks and handling of the EVO better. And most importantly I would be looking to modify it right away. I have been looking around at HKS's website, ATP with their new turbo upgrades, and a bunch more. My main questions are how are the 5-speeds holding up, how strong are the engine internals compared to the old eclipses and talons and do you think it's worth waiting for the new MR EVO. Sorry to make you read through so much crap. Thanks

If you're looking to mod, get the EVO. It will respond very well, and the aftermarket is a bit better for the EVO. The same power can be achieved with not too many mods on the EVO. I don't know what to tell you about liking the STI's tranny better. It's all personal preference.
The tranny is pretty good. Just look into the clutch later, especially if modding, and keep an eye out for the transfer case. Some have had them go bad.
The internals are apparently very strong. Not many blown motors at all. Many people have been achieving great numbers (or times) on stock internals.
About the MR, it depends on what exactly you want out of the car. I don't see anything to wait for unless you're really interested in the aluminum roof, 6 speed, Bilstein shocks, special paint (gunmetal color), or the BBS rims. The aluminum roof will save some weight. I don't know about the MR's 6 speed because I haven't driven with it, but with the STI, I usually only use 6th on the highway. The regular EVO's suspension can be modded to compete with the MR's. Paint- personal preference. Rims- can be upgraded on regular EVO. It all depends on what you want from the car.
With that said, it seems like you will be modding the car, and a lot of people will agree that the EVO is better for that.
