05 MR Drain Plug Probe
Did my 1st oil change and I saw a probe attached to the drain plug.
So ya gotta use an open ended 17mm and not a socket.
Where does this line run to though is the question.

ok, follow up question. Is there any way you can relocate that sending unit to give a more accurate oil temp reading? I mean taking a reading from the coolest section of the oil system isn't exactly the best idea

Hey twan
I'm doing my first oil change (on MR) and this is proving to be very frustrating.. the open ended 17mm didn't fit on my drain plug. I used 19mm and it seemed to be a little big but worked, I hope I didn't strip it or something. Are you sure 17mm fits?
I'm still in the process of trying to take the oil filter off. I have big hands, this is a real pain! How the hell do you get it off?? I went and purchased 3 oil filter sockets one 74/76mm, one 75/77mm, and an oil filter 80mm socket all 15 flute. The 80mm was the only one that went on but it was too big and slipped. What size is it!?
I've already tried an oil filter wrench lined with sand paper and it wouldn't budge. I think I probably would have broken my hand on something if it came loose anyways. I'm dying here guys, I must be a really crappy wrench, any suggestions??
Thanks

it was 19mm for me as well, 17mm was too small.
the filter came off easily with the Sears adjustable filter wrench I got to remove the filter in my parents' Passat. That same wrench is too big for the M1-108 though, but I got a wrench for that size as well, from back when we owned a 94 Corolla beater.

Yeah, thanks for the responses guys. It was a bit of a pain to get off but came off ok (put a couple bends in it before it budged). I went to sears to pick up one of their tightening filter wrenches before I even started this lil' project but they were sold out of the smaller ones.
I put on a K&N, I very much appreciate the bolt pattern they put on the bottom of their' filters now. With free maintnance every 5000 miles I probably won't be changing it very often after 5000mi. I'll put a stock filter back on at about 3000 before it goes in for service. Then I think I'll leave it to the dealers for a while.
