Evo IX Article
I was just reading the MT EVO IX article and came across this:
"For those who care about such things, the 5000-rpm rev limiter is still active from a standstill. It has nothing to do with optimizing a launch; quite the contrary. Mitsubishi engineers says this is to protect the pinion of the ring-and-pinion in the front differential from a sudden shock of gear-shredding torque. Japanese-spec Evos don't have it because their tires aren't as grippy as ours, and they allow some wheelspin on a hard launch. So now you know."
yea, i smell bulls***

It's not only because the tires are stickier, but also because of the extra 100 lbs, which is a result of stricter crash standards here. It's not bull. Droping the clutch at high-RPM in an AWD car puts A LOT of strain on the driveline.
Look at the section titled "Shorter Gearing"

Also interesting is that the UK Evo is rated at 261 bhp. Maybe they measure HP deferently than SAE.

Great Technical Article on Evo IX
Has a lot of specific info on the changes put into the Evo IX as well as the effects those changes have. Some of the changes I read I haven't seen described anywhere else. There are actually a couple of articles on this page, look at the one further down.

I just discovered that these articles were just copied from media.mitsubishicars.com where MMNA puts all their press releases. So I guess they are pretty reliable...if a little biased...
Check out the MPG rating at the bottom...
Is there ANY way that it could be that high?

Nope. I have driven through a full tank of gas before with my A/F map 0'd out (Xede) and even then I stayed out of what little boost was there. I drove about 35% city/65% hwy and I was only able to get 26 MPG. I mean I was reeaaally easy on it and no dice. And this is with leaner A/F's due to the Xede, although I was rarely in open loop...

These are the specs released for the Lancer Evo IX, though. They say MIVEC improved fuel efficiency slightly, but that is a truly significant jump from the VIII. I know that the cruising gear ratio was also changed for better MPG. Maybe they tried extra hard to get a good MPG in the wind tunnel this time around since gas prices are so high...

I don't see why not, the 2005 is rated at 19 mpg city and 26 mpg highway. The MIVEC system is supposed to give more power along with better economy.
