Mitsu confirms SportBack Lancer

Exactly. For example, VW is bringing back their TDI line with a 2.2L turbo diesel. In stock form, it might only make ~140 horsepower, but makes nearly ~240 ft/lbs of torque, all while making ~50 MPG. A bit of modding and you get get power levels quite a bit higher than that without sacrificing fuel economy (or even improving it).

Would it be too much to ask for a AWD diesel sportback with sport suspension and nice Evo seats?

It will probably be called the Galant VR-4 eterna in Japan, and the lancer ralliart sportback here, according to the most recent Japanese auto magazines I picked up. Here is a link to the autoblog spy photos of the car as it will appear at the Geneva Auto Show

A little more info on the Sportback
The final production version will be shown at the Paris Show in September, but Autocar will be driving it June.
I don't know how reliable Autocar is but if they are correct, that's quite the wait! If the production version is debuted in September, then it will probably hit Euro dealers a few months later so I'd guess that the soonest we'd see the Sportback in the States would be Spring 09
