I believe the whole acquisition/merger was due to Peugeot wanting a presence in the U.S market, and not the racign thing. Peugeot is a very strong appearance in the racing with their own line-up, so I dont think acquiring Mitsu would make a huge difference. My younger brother is a huge Peugeot fan, and has told me that they have also show a lot of interest in Mitsu's hybrid technology. I think it's simply a good move for them as Mitsubishi has finally gain some strength in the U.S market in the last few years.

^ what he said. Mitsubishi has been one of the hardest hit manufacturers in the United States. They appear toward the top of the list each time the report comes out for sales losses over the previous year.
