Not necessarily that I want to start messing with it myself, but as a programmer I am curious.

Custom, fairly expensive mapping and eeprom flashing software.
There's actually a lot of evo owners who are also highly trained programmers. We've been wanting an open source (or at least decently priced) alternative for a while now, but information has been scarce.
For example, I bought an xede and started working on my own software for that instead.

I don't know if that is fact or fiction, just rumor.

Seems that I have stepped on a mine field...
Obvioulsy big Al is a talented tuner. His results and popularity speak for themselves.
By the way, even a "retarded" guy such as myself knows that EPROM software in the wrong hands could be dangerous to your whip! I would suggest that people leave it to the pros...
That being said, I still find engine management fascinating.

For those who are interested check out this link http://www.technosquareinc.com/techtom.htm
I think Mighty Map fits the bill. I have a feeling that the software would be REALLY expensive. Much too pricey for those that want to just have a look see!
EcuTeck seems also to have some ecu software that they will sell to legit tuners. The software can be found here

As I stated before some things are probably left beyond reach for the curious. I can hear the sound of an engine blowing up! LOL
