Why I chose Meth. over Race Gas. Was it worth it?
I had been running 110Leaded gas thru my car for 30K miles. I know, it was not cheap!
I wanted the extra saftey and OOOMPF which comes with it, but I thought it would serve me and my wallet better if I went with the Alkycontrol (AMS) meth kit. This would raise my "octane" to 108, and still give me the oomph.
I think the descision was a good one, but as most of you know about me, I chase gremlins here and there for a while now, and that doesnt bother ME, but maybe it bothers all my friends who own a CAR TRAILER! As once again recently I have had to call on them.
At issue now, is the fact I cant get over 19psi of boost, and The problem, I think is because of the parts I added on the car AFTER my Dyno at Dyno4mance in spring/summer. Those parts being: Alky injection and the HKS DLI II spark amplifier (twin power), and also the Magnacor plug wires.
I thought I would disconnect the Meth kit first. I cut the wires and disabled it. Something went wrong and needless to say, I flooded the IC pipe with methanol, and had to tow the car home last night. I still havent found the problem, and will continue to take the POST dyno parts off, and re-install to see if I can get my boost back. I will keep you posted. I will report my findings as always.
Here is my question:
If I leave the Methanol injection OFF the car, How much (guess) HP have I just removed from my car? I dont want to have the race gas in the car ALL the time, as you just never know when you have to "show someone the back of your car" . Lets say I keep the meth. injection, I know you have to change the oil more, as it thins the oil out, and I also hear it can spin the bearings easier also. Is that due to the change in viscocity of the oil, or the protecitive properties of the oil changing?
Anyhow, I am just wondering if this is an item of purchace of diminishing return. Ie: it is nice to get ALL the Go-fast parts, and just putting them on the car, DOESN'T mean the car is faster, most of the time it is the opposite. The parts have to WORK TOGETHER! I have had/replaced/gave away parts that I thought would make a difference, but actually DID NOT!
Is this something I would miss, either performance wise, protection wise, or something I better just leave alone? ie: hassle not worth the price of admission.
Thanks for looking in.
P.S. Maybe I am just venting, as if I look over this computer screen, I see my car out front on a trailer.

With my SMC kit that I had on my 04 RS I was tuned for 25psi and the controller was set to start spraying at 18lbs and max out at 25.
The dyno difference between pump gas and alky were about 25 HP but about 45lbs TQ.
There are times when I miss that car, but I'm thoroughly enjoying my IX now.

Thanks for the input Tony! In the difference between the two, is it the Meth. injection that GAVE you the extra gains? (+25 HP and +45 lbs TQ)If so, then this is a part I better leave on!! Those are too large of numbers to take the system off.

Yes smokedmustang, those gains were from the alky kit. The meth definitely is a great power mod. The torque difference is what is the most noticeable. I was running 1/2 methanol and 1/2 water. The only concern I had was what would have happened with pump failure. It made it a whole lot more fun to drive and a helluva lot cheaper than race gas.
