COBB is making Access Port for Evo
#151
Thanks for the correction, Trey. Sorry about the mis-info to everyone. Unfortunately, I don't know the name of the tech.

There's obviously more to the accessport than just reflashing, it puts the reflashing tool into the palm of your hands, without requiring a Laptop, and it has basic maps loaded, and their tuner tool would allow you to do some more advanced things (similar to tuning with ECUFlash) But its main advantage is being able to load maps without a Laptop.
My personal opinion on the product is their a bit late to the market for the current generation of Evolutions, I think this alone is a huge disadvantage for their product. Some people will use it because its easy. But a majority if what can be done, can already be done with free tools.
The big problem currently is you need real-time tuning. Because I'm directly involved in the real time tuning stuff for ECUFlash and the current loggers, I know the complexity involved in its development, and the limitations in the current ECU for doing some of the things the Accessport promises. Add the huge amount of variations in roms, and no real "Signature" that clearly indicates its location and function (there are table markers, but some roms have things in a different order, not just a different location)
The DIY tuning for the Evo is a bit more complex than "Staged parts" and since the car has been in the market for quite some time, people don't always stick with a specific vendors staged parts. So tuning for each car is more specific than a "Stage 1, Stage 2 or Stage 3" Map.
I can't wait to see how the accessport turns out, and just like nearly any tuning tool, I plan on buying one to see how well it works, and if it can do what it promises to swap maps as needed.
There are a few unknowns also, assuming you remove realtime tuning from the mix, you have a nice handheld reflashing tool, unfortunately we're still not sure how many times you can reflash an ECU before you begin to have read/write problems. There have been some tuners who have flashed a single ECU hundreds if not thousands of times, so we may be okay.
The value I see in the Accessport is for the "Eflash" type stuff, because now an individual can buy this device to load an Eflash, or preloaded with an E-flash. I can only hope that the value of the accessport is the hardware, and its sold as such, and encourages people to buy the hardware and not focus so much on the tunes. But that would also mean Cobb needs to accept an open approach to their hardware. I think they can sell alot more units for resale from tuners to Eflash recipients, but not lock anyone into an expensive hardware platform and software licensing scheme that doesn't offer much flexibility. Marrying one unit to one ECU is definitely okay though, it provides safety and backup of the persons roms.
