HYDRA or AEM EMS
#6
I haven't used one, but hear the Hydra is a pretty decent system. I've heard they have pretty good reliability (which the AEM isn't really known for), but have heard complaints about the software being a little cumbersome/lacking. Your best bet is to probably talk to your tuner and see which they would rather use, are more comfortable with, or prefer.
I wouldn't say only use a standalone if you're over XXX amount of hp. If you want full control over everything, want to be able to tune in real-time, and have some extra features the stock ecu doesn't have, then get a standalone. The stock ecu is capable, but is limited in some of its capabilities and how much its been unlocked so far.

The AEM is very dependable but it is only as good as the tuner, the same will be with the hydra in my experience the hydra is not as friendly to use to switch between trims and maps while tuning and the hydra doesn't have map switching on the fly to my knowledge either. With the hydra you have to cycle the key to even get the changes to stick or show up. In my experience it is not a user friendly system especially when it comes to its GUI frontend software, keys are backwards and very non standard.
