It drops to 13.0:1 at around 3000rpm and continues to get richer and richer to 10.0:1 or below at redline! The ideal AFR as I've been told is to hold around 13.0-13.2:1 steadily. 10.0:1 is far from it! No wonder the black suts are evident on factory tuned Evo's.

Soon as I make more progress I will be getting a WidebandO2 and an accurate Boost gauge to datalog my MR and my friend's Evo's.

p.s. thanks for sharing the insight.
NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Do not try to lean the car to 13:1!!!!!!

An NA motor will make best power between 13:1 and 12:1 IF the motor is not detonation limited.

That is way too lean for a boosted motor without race gas. Be safe and shoot for 11:1 to 10.5:1 range for now.

HAHA, I stole the BPU from the Supra community. It stands for: Basic Performance Upgrade (think bolt-ons).

Of course to autocrossers like us, we would know what BSP (B Class Street Prepared) stands for!

Good catch.

Yes you're right. It was a miscommunication on my part

After speaking with a few local tuner shops in the area, the 13:1 I was told is meant for NA motors.

I've read the following for Turbo 4cylinders
  • On Pump 93 :: 11:1
  • On Race Gas :: 11.8:1 - 12.1:1 or leaner depending on Octane or if the car is Alcohol/Water Inj equipped

But then again there are people quoting leaner numbers too. Not sure who to trust in this number game.

It all depends on how "daring" you are I would say!

I've personally run 11.8:1 with a bit of boost on 93 with no ill effects. The motor obviously loves it with the wonderful noises it makes. However, when the weather got colder, I decided to aim a little lower and am currently running ~11.5:1 and tapering down to ~11.2:1.

I run around 11.9:1 on toluene and jack up the timing by about 4* up top ... these cars BEG to go faster.

I run 11.8-12.0 with no issues on 93......11:1 is too rich imo

Wonderful thread! Thanks for the time and effort.

I purchased a new MR last April and it is still bone stock. If there is anything I can do to help please let me know. I am looking to get prepared to modify with an intent to stay stock for a while longer. The itch is hard not to scratch but I know I'll need that warranty for something (owner of a DSM).

In preparation for modifications later, I want to learn the tuning process. I plan on obtaining the basics to start getting familiar with tuning. My plan is to start purchasing mods now so I don't blow a big hole in my pocket all at once. I am going to install the parts in stages so that I can dyno and tune often to see the improvements. I was hoping to keep a detailed history for the benefit of all.

Keep us updated and let me know if I can help having a stock 9 MR!

Yo Everyone!

Thanks for keeping this thread alive, and I apologize for the dissappearance for the holiday season. As some of you know, I've been traveling in SoCal visiting family and friends (planning on moving "back" here soon), so I have to make sure I secure a few things before that happens.

I will be returning to CT by the end of January and it seems like I'll be setting up a datalogging session with Max!

Thank you MAX for your donation toward the Project Evo Tuning!!!!

This thread is a great read! Gus, you'll need to re log my car AGAIN since it will no longer be stock

Did you have a chance to compile the runs we did after we fixed my WG?

This may be a starting point on a N/A car but catastrophic engine failure AFR for a turbocharged engine.

Do NOT attempt to run 13+AFR on a boosted engine.

Let us know if you are interested in obtaining a zeitronix wideband for your data aquisition needs.
