How to pick the cam i need? 272 280 270 etc???
I tried to do a little searching and couldn't find the answer i want.
I'm looking to put some cams in but, would like to know what the cam timing does as far as the 272 280 number goes. what might be a pro or con to one than the other and why do some people run a different cam on intake side than the exhaust side.
if it helps i'm looking to do alot of tracking rather than drag or freeway fun. also why go with a brian cower 400$ set rather than a cosworth 700$ set..
and if you got time valve springs retainers and valves..... do they need replacing or not running stock boost and when might it be a good idea to change em.
Sorry alot to ask for but i'm trying to learn and not just buy **** and i really do appreciate the input...thanks guys

If you searched, you'll find that Cosworth gets very good reviews here. Ppl have said they like them better than the HKS due to a broader powerband. GSC also gets very good reviews. BC, haven't heard of too much, but is a deal for budget builds I think. I dont think springs and retainers are a must for 272's unless you'll be reving much higher than stock redline, or going for 280s.
In the end, its up to your usage. I dont have cams yet, but I daily drive the thing so 264 intake and 272 exhaust is a good combo, so I've read.

The advice is different for a Evo IX than an VIII. ONLY pay attention to threads and advice for 2006 Mivec Evolution IX engines.
From what I have seen, almost everyone with that motor runs Cosworth or GSC S1.

264 intake and 272 exhaust is best for you. 280's cams are full blown race, you need to do internal with 280 because it too aggresive. on some 272 like Cossie u might need to do internal. I have HKS and Cossie both in my car, both are 272's. i like the HKS more because i feel safe reving the car over 7300 rpm. of course it is reccomand to up grade valve train like Cossie. i have a 9 and currently run on Cossie mivec now but regret to take the HKS out...

not to be a dick but at this point can you please start a thread on how to get to 350 hp?
The info im getting is great can anyone explain why a 280 IS MORE AGRESSIVE than a 272 and why i'd need to upgrade valvle train. What does a 280 do that a 272 doesnt do...... im guessing 280 is a higher lift so, say i do a 272 intake 280 exhaust jus for kicks. over STOCK im allowing more intake air to be sucked in because its lift is higher than stock and even more flow on the exhaust side because its higher than my intake duration.
again if im on the right track what would help me choose the correct cam duration and why do people use 2 different durations
