your tuner is a joke if he is spewing that BS, sounds like he is either lazy or full of s (probably both) contact mellon or tscompusa for a good etune, they won't dick you like that guy. Can probably find some good local tuners in your area as well, ask around in your regional forums.

as far as your questions , yes the ecu has knock protection, but that does not mean you want to be using it all the time, it can still cause damage.

maybe it will drop the boost if it overboosts (if you have tephramod) but with knock I have not seen an option to drop boost to wastegate, and if tuner can't tune for the correct boost what makes you think he can setup that system?

its total BS that he can't set the right boost, and isn't a real tuner if he can't figure that out.

If you have the cable and ecuflash it is easy to lower it on your own but you would still be better off getting it tuned by someone who is worth a S, I know it sucks to spend more $$ but you might as well get it done right. Who knows what else is crap with the joke of a tune, boost is probably one of the easiest parts to setup so if he jacked that up I would cringe to see the rest of the tune.

If your determined to do it yourself you'll need to look at the base wastegate duty cycle maps and lower them if your overboosting, and also mess with your target psi or load to make sure they are not set too high. These maps vary from rom to rom which is why you should consider just finding a decent tuner to fix it.
