What to Tune first: timing or afr?

My car came with a timing map that was overly aggressive for 91 pump and pig rich in the afr. When WOT, it's in the 10's afr. So a very safe timing map was flashed which eliminated all the knocks, but the car pull slow. The afr seems to be rich with wot at 10s. I want slowly increase power, so..should work on the timing map first, using the MTBT method or start with AFR and leaning it out? I was told when increasing timing, the afr will start to lean out??

I can try and help you out.
What mods do you have?

Are you running V7?

Did you do a boost leak and compression test? Is the car mechanically sound?

I would install whatever parts you plan on running then take it to a dyno and have it tuned. The factory knock sensor can keep you out of some trouble but not all. After its tuned then you can log it on the street and make small changes and log it.
I would also recommend this.

http://www.evoxforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=25795 post 3 The 2nd map actually does make the car drive better off boost but leads to the high idle issue.

Thanks to all the guys that took the time to figure this out and post it.
There is also a thread somewhere about logging A/F thru the stock ECU

If you insist on street tuning it after checking out the above I would get some 100 oct. Then run/log 3rd gear and set the boost to what you are going to run on pump gas (23-24 is pretty safe on 93) See what loads the car hits. Then adjust your timing map so that max timing under boost builds from 0-3 to 8-12 at 7000-7500. A tuned map is much different then the stock one.

After that you can adjust the A/F slightly leaner if need be. Keep it on the rich side until you run all the 100 oct out. Then see where the A/F is on pump gas. I would shoot for 11-11.5. You may also want to richen up the lean spool table a hair under part throttle (most people shoot for 12.5-12.8 for spool up under 12-15psi) Lean is mean under part throttle/light load.

A pair of DET cans would also be useful as you may run into phantom knock.

Once you have all that done ,lower the boost 2-3 psi and log the car in 4th and see what changes need to be made. If you have V7 and proper boost control you should be able to get the same boost in most gears. Of course all logging should be done on the flat road in a safe area.. in mexico.
